Hey Dawn,

I am always looking for new people to train with and yes I am registered for the Smith pOINT Triathlon.  Let me know where you live and train and maybe we could bike, run, or swim one day.

Keith

P.S. By the way, The Runner's Edge store has a group swim down at Tobay
Beach at 630 pm on Monday nights.  Its open to anyone, I checked it out and it is a great group open water swim.

I'm doing Smith Point, that's August 8th, right?
I do my swims at Sunken Meadow (coming from Kings Park) but I have days off during the week so sometimes meeting up is hard.  Hit me up if anyone wants to meet.

I'll be racing Smith Point as well, the water should be calm and warm and the biggest (and only) hill on the course is the bridge in and out of the park.

I typically swim at Sunken Meadow every Wednesday and Friday morning at 6am with a few people. I'll be there tomorrow morning in a BlueSeventy Helix wetsuit and either the Sunrise Tri race kit or a black BlueSeventy one piece.

Let me know if anyone wants to join so I can keep an eye out for you!

What are some good swim drills to do in a pool to train. I recently have been doing 5 sets of 20  laps with 3 to 5 min rest in between.

Does anyone have any other suggestions to build endurance and strength.

I would do shorter distances with less rest.  Doing 5 x 500 seems long and boring.  Depending what kind of swimmer you are, you could get tired and and create bad habits with poor form.

Here is a workout I just did.

500 warm up - 200swim, 100kick, 100 pull, 100 swim

8 x 100 quick  paced with 15 seconds rest in between

6 x 50 medium paced with 10 seconds rest in between

200 - alternating swimming and kicking

200 warm down

LOL LUby! I love Meshutt. I was there Sunday and got stung by some jellies-eeooww! Didn't stop me though.I saw someone swimming when I left-wetsuit and white cap-was that you? With my schedule I guess I generally have to bump into people by accident-I'm finding trying to schedule anything is difficult-rats!

Dawn, I was not there Sunday although i should have been... I did not realize the jellies were out already, isn't it kinda early for them ?? I can swim by a school of blue fish but jellies freak me out.. lol
I am doing smith point as well and OWS is not my strong suit, well then again either is biking or running. I just like to finish and beat my times from my last Tri !! Someday when i lose more of this weight i would love to do an Ironman but that is a far off goal right now. I want to do one before i retire which i will be eligible for in approx 6 yrs.

Hi Dawn,

I live in Manorville and signed up for the Mighty Hamptons triathlon in September.  I too am in need of a swimming partner.  I did the Mighty Montauk triathlon this past June and I struggled with the swim.  Hearing about the jellyfish is freaking me out though!  My name is Joy and I am 34, married with two dogs. (In case you were wondering!!lol)

Can anyone help me on this issue.

I am looking to cut down on my T1 and want to start the bike with my shoes already clipped in. Can anyone advise on how this is done. I see people use rubber bands but never know how to apply them.

If you know of a good site that demonstrates this, please provide.

"8x 100" means 8 reps of 100 yards each.

does anyone know if wetsuits will be allowed during this race? i'm assuming no, but i'd be happy if they were.

I would keep an eye on the weather leading up to the race, it looks like cooler temps and some thunderstorms in the coming week. this should help cool down the water.

i think the bay side of Smith Point is pretty shallow and the water doesn't move all that much (according to a friend who used to lifeguard there), so this will probably lead to warm water on race day.

that being said, i'll be surprised if wetsuits are not legal.

how's everyone's training going??

Most people (myself included) loop a rubber band through the heel loop of the left shoe then around the rear quick release lever. this will keep your cranks level while you mount, the band will break with the first rotation of the cranks (just dont use a HUGE rubber band).

Please make sure you practice this alot before race day. I've seen too many people try this for the first time and either miss the seat (ouch) or really struggle to get in their shoes. Once you've landed safely on the seat take a few pedals to get up to speed then put your foot in, pedal more and put your 2nd foot in. Make sure you keep looking at where you're going, not just your shoes!!

a better way to cut down on yout T1 time is to practice getting out of your wetsuit with your feet and putting your helmet on at the same time. watch any ITU video at www.triathlon.org and you'll see these guys and girls in and out in about 30 secs
hope that helps.

Well, training is going good here-two wonderful children to entertain (I'm so lucky)soo -I can certainly do all the components separately and can brick the bike ride and run-did I use that term correctly ?SmilePretty  exhausted after that   I'll tell ya LOL!
I'd try to  do all 3 except that it is difficult to find that block of time-until race daythat is !
I'm ready just trying to keep the jitters down -woohooo bring it!
