husse23 - 2010-07-30 9:20 AM Can someone explain what a BRICK is?

A brick is simply stacking two workouts back to back with minimal time in between. Most common is  a bike/run brick although I do many swim bike bricks in my training. The time or distance of each leg depends on your fitness, experience and the race distance you're preparing for.

You don't need to go directly from one to another like you will on race day, but it's helpful to keep the transition time short, I typically try and get running within 10 mins of dismounting the bike.

The week leading up to a race I like to do short, race pace efforts with lots of recovery. If this is your A race you'll want to be well rested but need to stay sharp. I like 1 min race efforts on the bike with 3-5 min recovery, some open water swimming and short pickups on the run.

If I take a rest day it would be Friday with some short efforts in all 3 disciplines on Saturday. Be sure to sleep as much as possible this week and hydrate!

As for Saturdays pick up, it's out in Mastic Beach. The address is on www.eventpowerli.com

Anyone know if the markers will be in the water before Sunday?  I'd like to swim it ahead of time if possible.

markers probably won't be out before sunday. if lifeguards are on duty you can still get in and swim but the race director will most likely put them out morning of when their USAT insurance coverage kicks in

I have two questions.

Does anyone know a rough estimate of how many people are racing?

How do you see your ranking in USAT for your age division?

picked up my packet this evening in Nassau at Modells.  i am bib #64.  i'll be in an Orca S3 sleeveless.  The look on my face will reveal that I watched nearly every minute of Shark Week on Discovery this week.  can't wait to dress up like a seal.

See everyone Sunday bright and early-

-Dave

...on that note...has anyone been in this bay before?  i did my first tri 2 weeks ago, a sprint up in vermont in lake champlain.  Water temp was 76 degrees (started at 9:00am)...still went with the wetsuit and had a tri top on underneath...was hot.  the water was amazingly refreshing (as most lake water should be)...but the weeds were gnarly (they wrapped around your legs if you did not stay completely horizontal) and the american eels were out in full force.  It was like swimming in a swamp and i hated every second of the swim leg.  Hoping this water is less murky.  i realize we dont have a clear pool with a black line to follow, but i'm still a relative newbie to the OWS and still getting used to the strange conditions it provides.

really excited for this race...will be the last of my 3 in my first season racing.

I heard the water is calm and shallow here, so you should be able to see a shark headed for you.  Guess i didn't pay attention to the packet pickup, as I thought both days were in Mastic Beach, how annoying.

Bib #138 - BlueSeventy Helix wetsuit, black BlueSeventy one piece tri suit, Kestrel Airfoil bike. My first name is Matt!

Looking forward to some good racing on Sunday and meeting some new friends!

Take the warning on the bike map seriously about staying to the right, there are many sections of the bike course with two way cycling traffic and a couple of turns that could lead to trouble if you take the corner close (or wide depending on the way you're going

Haven't done an OWS here but I spent alot of years boating on it. The water will be warm, much warmer than the ocean. Should be pretty shallow, not murky but also not clear. I wouldnt worry about eels or weeds.

thanks for the heads up on the water...i've spent most of my years on Long Island fishing instead of swimming in the waters, which has lead to some of my apprehension.  Time to just put face down and do it.  Good luck everyone.
