Subject: Atlantic Coast Triathlon at Amelia Island : Official Thread

Hey guys, just wanted to start a thread for this race.  So who is in?  Has anyone done this race in past years and would like to comment?  This will be both my wife's and my first HIM.

I did this race the inaugural year and felt that it was a good race. I didn't do it last year, but am thinking about doing it this year. Yes, the bike is very flat except for one bridge crossing. The latter part of the bike course takes you near the ocean where you can run into some wind. The run is flat with one small bridge. I remember that it got pretty hot during the run, but there were a lot of shaded portions that helped. I would recommend this race.

2 weeks from today! I hope this cooler/drier weather sticks around.

I'm planning to arrive around 1:30 on Saturday to get in a nice swim, then check in as soon as transition opens. After that I'm going to drive the course. I already have a couple of friends who are coming, but there's more room in the minivan if anybody else wants to tag along.

I'm in for ACT.  This will be my 3rd 1/2 Iron distance and second race at this spot (did their Jax Triathlon Sprint Series #1).  It was well organized for the Sprint, so I imagine it will be the same for this race.  One nice thing is that the beach park where the tri will start has outside freshwater showers.   You can rinse of before heading home if you have that short or long drive.   Ocean was flat for the sprint, but October can be very rough in the Atlantic at times.  We'll hope the Nor'easters are kicking in.

Best news of the day.  I think I'm dreading the 4+ hour drive home more than the race itself...

It'll be the wife and my first HIM.  I think I go from "you're ready" to "oh crap what have I forgotten" about 3 times a day.

I'm in - looks like nice weather!  I'm hoping maybe the wind blows a bit less and that the ocean will flatten out a bit?

What is the prediction for whether we'll be wetsuit legal?  I saw upper 70's for a water temp here:

If it's close (which this is) they will usually find a deep hole in a shady spot to take the temp to ensure it's wetsuit legal.

Congrats on you and your wife doing this!  My wife made the commitment and did FL this may with me.  She'll won't be competing this Sunday but will be there for support.  That's awesome that the both of you can do this together.  It makes the training and family life easier with a spouse who knows and understands your time commitment to training.

We'll be arriving Friday evening coming in on a 5 1/2 hr drive...so I'm there with ya'!

Man I hope the surf conditions are more like what they were this morning as opposed to the afternoon.  I couldn't physically swim North because of the strong current after that Noreaster.    Should be low tide throughout the swim.

I wanted to bump this up for anyone considering doing event with DRC sports.  I'm pretty unhappy with them right now.

For some background a had a pretty bad car vs me accident during this race which resulted in me waking up in an ambulance:

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=230963&start=1

Anyway, I reached out to the RD to try to get him to help me contact some witnesses that I thought I would need for insurance purposes.  I also told him I wanted to talk to him about how to make that part of the course safer.  He gave me a half-hearted reply and was never heard form again.  Not even a "I'm glad you are OK"

I have since emailed him 4 more times.  Not a single reply.

Honestly I know that all open courses are dangerous but that stretch of road on A1A is straight, has no intersections and is off the beaten path.  The speed limit is prob 35-40.  Cars were going 60-70 easily.  They need more traffic control out there or someone is going to get killed.

So consider this when signing up for any of their races.  I'll never do another one of his races.

I'd rather give my money to an RD who actually give a darn about his athletes.
