I created two version of the same hill, one with a recovery loop, and the elevations are waaaaaay different. I have no idea why. The loop at the bottom is flat, Iowa river bottom flat. What's up?

By the way, this is my favorite hill repeat.

Dam Hill Repeat - aggressive:

Dam Hill Repeat - easy:

What happened?

Your point in the map with inflated elevation 0.61 miles from the start reads an 800 foot elevation gain for that segment. Not sure why it thinks that spot is 800 feet above the previous but it is clearly incorrect. You'll have to replot the route most likely.

I don't fully understand the complexities behind the elevation data but here's a simplistic explanation. When you're plotting the route, each time you add a point the elevation is calculated at that particular point. This introduces some error. The error accumulates throughout your route until the end and frequently the total elevation is way off. To correct this, you have to edit your route from your route manager and hit reset elevation. This will then redo the elevation data for the whole route based on USGS elevation records. Its accuracy is improved and you should see better results.

Marmadaddy could probably give a better explanation but there's only one thing you need to know: hit the reset elevation button after plotting each route.

nah, you did fine. Marma told me basically this when I had the same issue. "reset elevation" after you put in the route is the way to do.
