Subject: Viking Man Swim Question

Anyone done the Viking Man? I wasn't ready for the Boise 70.3 this year so I am signing up for the Viking Man instead. My question is, how is the swim?

I am assuming that as it is in the Snake that the current makes for some fast easy swimming.

I ask because, due to a recent house purchase, move, and some other bills, I haven't had a gym membership for the last five months and I don't think I will be getting one soon. So I will be going into this swim with little to no swim training this year.

Am I going to die? Or will the current make up for my lack of training. I am just worried about finishing the swim. My swim time at the Boise 70.3 last year was 1hr 6mins (horrible I know, huge lack of training last year too) so will the current allow me to finish the swim in around an hour?

Thanks for any input you guys have.

I did the Vikingman last year. Was my first 70.3. Last year the race was the first week of June on a particularly cold day, so it was freezing - should be better in September. The current definitely helps. At the same time, you can't just float it :-) I got too close to shore, so I think I didn't take full advantage of the current. My swim time was 30:17. For sure a couple minutes faster than I would have done in still water. As for not dying... ha ha! I normally wouldn't recommend trying to swim 1.2 miles in a river without training for it - but I suppose if you did it last year for Boise, you could do it here. The nice thing is, you could always swim to the bank for a rest if you needed it. Hope that helps!

I just swam in the river for the Spudman. Just under a mile. It was the first time I was in the water all year. I did the swim in just under 25 mins. No way I would do that in still water. Just as a reference, swimming in Boise last year with some training I swam that one in 58 mins.

I did the VikingMan swim in 29 min. last year-however we did it in early June when the river was really moving (At one point I started floating and realized I was still making pretty good time) .  I don't know how much the flows change from spring to fall.
My usual swim times are 35-38 min.   Bike course is flat and fast, multi-lap.  Run is out and back-pancake flat.  See ya there.

Sounds good. I have gotten a few OWS's in in the past few weeks and they have gone better than expected. So between that and the current I should be able to get through no problem.

Sounds like it's going to be a great race!

I'm in the same boat.  I made a last minute decision last week to fly out from Austin, TX to do the 1/2 IM distance with my brother from SL.  Haven't been to the pool in over 3 months.  Also have to ramp up my run from 6 miles total in the previous month.  Should be a tough one, but I certainly don't have any concerns about finishing the swim, albeit very slowly.  The run on the other hand...

On the plus side, I do expect it to be wetsuit legal (right?), the course appears to be pancake flat, and I won't have to deal with the Austin heat.  Should be a fun race!

See y'all out there!

Dave

Yeah it should be wetsuit legal.
