Pre-race routine:

Drove to race while eating a pb&j. Tripped over my bike getting my gear out of the car, skinning my pinky toe. Biked to packet pick-up but didn't have id so had to bike back. Good thing, as I'd left my car key on top of my car. Oh boy.
Event warmup:

Peed in the lake and stood around chatting with great BT peeps.
  • 14m 43s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards

This was a really strong swim. The first time I did this race the swim was a total cluster and I'm fresh off the mayhem of the Motor City Mile so I went wide and sighted to the buoys and not the other swimmers. In what seemed like no time I was past most the other caps from my wave and was catching the previous wave. This was a very comfortable pace and I'm honestly surprised I let 2 women out ahead of me... I felt like I was way ahead of everyone.
What would you do differently?:

Swim a little faster! :) Oh, and check my Road ID before starting, the velcro came loose and I slowed down to redo it as I didn't want to loose it.
Transition 1
  • 01m 8s

I totally had an advantage as my bike was at the very end of the rack *right* inside the swim entrance. My bike was literally 20 feet from the water, maybe less. The bummer was that somebody had moved my towel with all my stuff from one side of my rack to the other for some bizarre reason (there was plenty of room for everyone) and that caused some disorientation on my part. I sat, put socks and shoes on, helmet and went. Thankfully the BT crew was at the bike line yelling at me to keep running my bike up over the grass to the pavement before mounting. Apparently they'd watched many athletes floundering to find momentum on the grass. Thankful!!
What would you do differently?:

Checked my spot one last time before getting in the water. I could've done this from the beach, but I was just hanging out instead. (tied for 7/20 AG)
  • 38m 40s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 19.24 mile/hr

This is probably the fastest I've ever gone in a race. It was sweet to race where we train! I know every turn and hill out there and could anticipate just which gear to be in. I felt like I was flying. I nearly choked just now when I checked my bike computer and it reads 15 something for mph. WTF? Thank god the chip has me at faster than that. I drank an entire bottle of Cytomax on the bike and played leapfrog with an 18 year old boy on a road bike w/pink handlebar tape. He was starting to get really annoying! I didn't get passed by a single woman in my AG on the bike, which felt GREAT.
What would you do differently?:

Keep getting more miles, it is clearly paying off at least for shorter distances. I'm so much more confident in my bike handling this season!
Transition 2
  • 00m 45s

Dismounted on the line, ran to stuff and grabbed things as fast as possible. Ran out while putting on my visor and number belt. This was pretty fast! Again, I was right *ontop* of the run out, so that was nice. (4/20 AG)
What would you do differently?:

  • 27m 9s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 46s  min/mile

I was psyched since I knew I had a good swim and no one had passed me on the bike. One woman in my AG blew by me in the first 5 min. of the run and I knew I couldn't catch her (she ended up running a 24:xx 5k, beyond my stand alone PR). I also had in my head that I was scheduled to do a 12 mile long run in less than 24 hours!! So, I pushed myself but didn't hammer. At the final turn around with a mile to go I saw two women behind me who looked like they could be in my AG, as I passed I checked a calf and at least that woman was in my AG. That gave me incentive to push the last mile. After a little more uphill it was thankfully flat to downhill to the finish and then there were Smoak and Trixie yelling and honking for me! I stayed ahead with my final push and ended up in 3rd AG! Yayyayayay! :)
What would you do differently?:

Post race
Warm down:

Hung out with the BT MI cheerleaders, stuffed my face with all the post-race nom noms, cheered loudly for Trish! :)

Event comments:

This is a well run local race. I hope it continues to succeed. Loved that there's an elite wave to get all the fasties out of the way and make it beginner friendly. I'm not a beginner, but I appreciate not having all the whoosh whoosh disc wheels come flying by me! :) Fun race, nice medal, good people and treats.
