Subject: URGENT-NEED SPORTS DOC/PT IN ATLANTA
Tale of woe time.......I have been training for IMKY, not problems to date, but my left knee has suddenly decided to stop being happy. I cannot run without pain, this morning I tried to do an easy run and it was fine for the first two miles and then it started screaming.

I need to find a sports doc/pt who is familiar with triathlon/IM training to go to and see what needs to happen. I have 31 days until my race.

Any help or recommendations are greatly appreciated.

I live/work in the Marietta/Smyrna area so north side would be preferable, but not a requirement.

Thank you.

I have been to the Roswell office of Resurgens Orthopaedics with knee issues (Dr Titelman? I think, but I'm not sure).  You can search for the office location most convenient to you and then view the doctors by specialty.

In the case of my knee, it turned out that I had an IT band problem and the doctor helped me incorporate rehab into my training so that I could keep training for and finish my race.  I had a shoulder issue for which I saw a different doctor and we resolved it with rest/naproxen.

And, I worked with my cousin (Dr Fogle in the St. Joseph's office) when I had PF.  He also does sports injuries.

You are right ask for recommendations as the standard answer from most PT's is RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation).  This is often a cop out for finding what the root underlying problem is that caused the injury in the first place.

One recommendation is for Mary Doyle of Velocity Sport and Spine ... she is a multiple IM finisher, USAT certified coach and no nonsense PT.  Barbara Johnston is another triathlete/endurance athlete that "gets it" too.  Both understand what we do, the stresses we put on our bodies and how to fix it.  Best of all, they are straight talkers and will tell you what you need to do - not what you want to hear.

Contact information here: http://www.velocitypt.com/about.htm

Regardless of where you go, do not go to a run-of-the-mill doc-in-a-box PT.

Go see Dr. Sadri or Dr. Nik at First Choice.  They have office hours in Alpharetta during the week and the main office is in Decatur.  They specialize in sports injuries and treat tons of triathletes (lots on this board - see this thread).

This doc did shoulder surgery on me end of December - he also treated me for a hamstring injury - really like him and now in Smyrna area (he was in John's Creek)

Dr. Jeffrey Kovacic
Emory-Adventist Hospital
(770) 801-4646
3949 South Cobb Drive
Smyrna, GA  30080

I have also been to Dr. Sadri as well - same hamstring injury as above - he was the one who actually treated me after going to orthopedic above.

I know you're feeling depressed and really upset right now with every reason to be.  Be smart while you work this out so you don't make things worse.

Good luck.

Just an FYI - Karen on the boards here went to Alpharetta location last week and they do not have an Xray machine there - so most likely not best place for first visit - if you choose First Choice go to full service Decatur office.

Dr. Patel at Dominion Orthopedics is an IM FL finisher and active triathlete, she's with the same group that Dr. Kovacic(mentioned above) used to be at.  She is a podiatrist and also sees sports med patients.  I've met her several times and am very impressed.  She see's patients in Johns Creek- while not Marietta, I think a good doc worth the drive.

If you're looking for PT, Tye at the Acworth office of PT Solutions is an excellent PT.  He's not a triathlete, but he might as well be one with all of the runners and triathletes that he regularly treats.

Thanks for the input everyone. I am off to Resurgens tomorrow morning to see what is up.

Wish me luck, IMKY is only 31 days away.

Thanks for this - I was worried about traveling to Smyrna if ever in need again of a good sports orthro.  Did she just join the practice?

I've been going to Dr. Hatrak at Synergy Release Sports up in Alpharetta for about 5 years.  They always get me up and going again whenever anything doesn't feel right.  He works with all types of Athletes including triathletes:

Hope you feel better,
