As part of my training for IM Cozumel, I've got to do a few 6+ hour/100+ mile rides. On a lark, I decided to see if there was a way to make it to the Red River & back that was about the distance of an IM bike. I've put together a route that hits right about that distance
(it's actually 116 miles
) and went to drive it with a cyclist buddy
(not sure who here knows Tim, Sabrina's husband
) yesterday. The roads are good; less than 20% of the ride is chipseal, and most of the chipseal is old & worn down on the north end of the route. The rest is really smooth. The shoulders on Preston/289 are really wide - almost a car lane unto themselves - and we have them for almost the whole route. There are a pair of gas stations we'll pass by twice that are open on weekends & have the essentials
(ice, water, gatorade...beer?
) covered, so you won't be more than 30 miles or so between places to refill your bottles and/or take bathroom breaks.
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=3928143I want to get a group of us together to do this ride, maybe 6-12 people
(more are welcome, obviously
). We'll start at Tommy's favorite place on the planet, the Starbucks at
Main & Teel in
Frisco. The average pace for this ride is going to be ~
16mph.
Saturday, October 30th is the date & sunrise is around 7:45am that time of year, so I'm shooting for wheels on the ground around then. I think this weekend would be a good time for the IMCoz/IMAZ to get in one of their last long rides before the taper begins.
Anybody interested in seeing the end of Preston Road?
