Yep! Crazy, right?  I see they moved the transition in and out for the run, probably because the swimmers would be in the way now.

I'm sad they changed the bike as Clara Barton is going to be a lot more crowded than having all of the GW parkway to ourselves would have been.

I'm in M25-29, in Swim Wave 12, starting at 7:44....
Depending how the pro/elites are divided, it is probably 9 “full” waves of people... 250-ish people a wave?
So say 2000 people on the bike before me, and I'll say I will pass 1/4 of them.

If I pass ¼ of them….500 people in 70 minutes.  7 people a minute....

If I pass ½ of them…
1000 people in 70 minutes.  Thats 14 people A MINUTE.... or one person every 132ft.  Thats a crowded bike course, how can they even pretend to monitor drafting or blocking.... because there is no way both won't happen.

I have already resigned myself to participating in the worlds largest bicycle conga line. Perhaps someone should contact someone from Guiness Book?

I was just thinking that. I hope they send out a post-race survey this year, I'll for sure be mentioning it!

At some point the course will be so saturated it will be physically dangerous, let's hope 7000 isn't that number.

I cannot fathom the logic of the order of the waves. I am going to be sitting around for 2:09 after transition closes and I enter the water. At least I'll have lots of time to use the porta john.

The one good thing is that the CBPW, IIRC, is a good deal flatter than the GWPW.  I think they used this route in 2008.  THe bad thing is that it looks like there are a great many more 180 degree turns again.  These are BAD NEWS!

DiscoGsus - 2010-08-30 3:54 PM

Unless you can get out early, the middle of the pack will have VAST numbers of drafting/blocking groups.  My feeling is that 2/3rds of these groups dont even know that they are doing anything all that wrong.   Expect 5 to 6 bikes abreast.

Luckily, I got a decent swim start at 7:32, i think.  Not sure how early I registered, but I think it was right when registration opened.  Hopefully, I can stay out of any rolling clusters.

Best of Luck to everyone on this race!  For me this is the best race of my season.  Lots of great energy and activity.

The Nation's Tri replied on FB that the waves were determined based on the sizes of the groups. I do not understand that answer.

A friend that did it in 2008 jst told me that this race attracts a lot of 1st timers and that there were a lot of people laid out on the 180's. And that was when there were only 2000 participants. Now with 7000 and being in the back this is not looking pretty. I have improved to a slightly better than average swimmer, but my strength in the bike. The bike course is going to stink.

Yes it is flatter, but I was looking forward to the 1 mile long hill right after the river to separate from the others. Now we are on road 1/2 the width. Starting almost dead last only makes it worse.

I make skip this race. I have Augusta 2 weeks later and that is my A race. Knowing what I know now, I never would have registered.

Yes, definitely a major first timer race, but I can't say that will translate into a wall of bikes on the road.

I also cant say that it won't either.

I will say that as most of my riding is right out my door and I am local to the area, I am used to constantly shouting "ON YOUR LEFT!" and having passing differentials near 10mph, which is exactly what you are going to experience.

On the other hand, I expect that there are going to be a great number of experienced cyclists out there that should keep the chaos down. Also, I think the total number of registrants was closer to 4000 in 2008.  I dont think it was, or this year will be, a complete cluster.  You will just have to keep your head.

The 180 turns need to be respected.  Bombing them, even if it is within my ability, is out of the question.  Many MANY accidents will happen at these. Personally, I will treat them as if I am in a group ride, shout "SLOWING!," show my hand if I can, check behind me if I can and take them without apexing or altering my line.  The inside line generally is the best if you can get it early.

Then again (!) you (DougRob) have a good reason to skip it.  Good luck in Augusta!

Spoke with my coach just now and he is recommending skipping this race. The potential negative (crowded technical course with LOTS of beginners, lack of planning, and looonnnngggg wait to start) far outweigh the positives (racing near my parents and family). I am probably going to skip it. I need to talk with my family before making the final decision.

I register early too but I don't think that's it.   I'm 554 and in the same age group as you.  This will be my first Oly so no clue what my time will be.

So our age group has this time slot then?
Maybe 25-30 is first 4 waves
a friend of mine in the M40-44 is in the 2800's-7:52 start.
seems like an age group organization wave start
where did you find the 6500= info?

I just went to the website and keep entering higher and higher bib numbers until it didn't return anything...

Does anyone know if metro will be open early on the 12th?

I was wondering the same thing about the Metro. It usually only opens at 7 on the weekends. I'll try to get info.

Im pretty sure that Metro wont be an option for athletes, but it might come in handy for spectators to catch some of the later waves.

Ran the DC tri, just a heads up, a good 15 minute wait for the bathroom and bring some TP with you( just in case).  The volunteers are quick to refill, but standing in line for 15 minutes then to realize no TP to be found.  I was getting a little nervous, luckley the volunteers showed up.  One less thing to worry about, good luck.

I just saw I'm in the 9am wave....is this going to be as much of a cluster **** as people think? LOL.
For a non-wetsuit swim and going late..(being a slow swimmer anyway...) i'll need to pass 500 people on the bike most likely.
I never did DC and it looked cool but thinking of skipping it now...
Thoughts from anyone who's done it?

Water Temp as of this morning: 79°F

Im hoping for really cool nights since the daytime highs should be in the high 80's today and tomorrow and in the high 70's until race day. Night time temps in the high 50's to mid-60's.

Water temp is running about 79F right now on USGS.gov and has fallen pretty much continuously for the last three or four days.  I expect the swim will be wetsuit legal, but I am planning on wearing a speed suit unless it gets below 75F.  Has the official measurement been made this weekend?  I recall reading in an email that they were going to make a measurement this weekend.

Calling for rain on Sunday at the moment.  THat would be crappy.  Literally.  DC sewers back up into the Potomac with heavy rains.

ETA^^^^looks like someone beat me to the temp report.

I'd guess they'll try real hard to get it wetsuit legal if it's big on first timers....
(search around for nice shady area...maybe dump a little ice near measuring point..lol)
