Anyone done Wasaga.  I'm considering it.  My concern is the swim.  Wasaga is pretty shallow.  Is the swim going to be a 750m run in knee deep water?

Naw - just the first maybe 200 meters...maybe less - and you can dolphin dive until the deep water. I don't remember it being a problem.

yeah the depth of the water is the least of any concerns. I have been in Wasaga Tri or Du for a few years (4 I think), and at least 2x the swim was canceled due to the waves coming in on shore (3-4foot swells).
The transition zone has moved from the dog beach area (2008 and before) to the Beach 1 area (2009, 2010...). In both areas, the wind coming on shore can make for some rough waves.

the last 50m or so in the water is in shallow, and you are able to either walk, or use a diving technique (stand, dive, stand, dive, etc.)

Hope that helps.

thought i posted...maybe not.  oke so anyways it looks like on the website they have an alternate swim in the river in case the swells come.  must have gotten complaints from the strong swimmers when they change it to a du!

random question-- but still related!

how is the wasaga course for a 1st time oly-distance competitor??

specifically, what's the bike course like (many sharp turns or steep hills?)
& the run....
(i'm hoping it's mostly on paved surfaces??)

thanks!

I am going to be doing Wasaga Sprint for my first triathlon. I know a couple guys that have did it last year, and they said the course was flat and fast. They recommended it, and had alot of fun.

The shallow parts you see alot of dolphin diving, but I am going to just swim it!

I did it last year.  I was told that the 750m starts when the water is deep enough to swim and ends when the water is too shallow to swim.  That means a long run out and a long T1.  Otherwise a good, well organized race.

I'll be doing the sprint again this year.

I'm doing the TAT at Wasaga as my first ever tri...I'm more than a little nervous!

What's the river like (in case they move the swim)? Please say there isn't a lot of seaweed!

Try hard not to run through the water.......do not want to kill your legs.

Bike course = flat and fast!
Run course = flat (but you have to run through a little bit of sand, about 100m total) so be careful through this section. Some other portions are on a wooden boardwalk, as well as paved road, and dirt trail. All flat though.
River = no weeds in sight, flat and fast? lol.

Did the TAT last year as my first ever tri.  The weather and water were glorious.

It got me well hooked on the sport and now I'm back this year doing the OLY as my A race having done Woodstock Sprint, Gravenhurst OLY and a couple of 10Ks runs in between.  What a wonderful year it has been!

Have fun and don't go out too hard.  Enjoy the atmosphere.

Thanks for the info! I feel better about the TAT next weekend now. I'm so glad that the back up river isn't totally infested with seaweed!

I'm a lot less nervous abuot the course itself now...but no less nervous about the race. I haven't been training nearly like I should. As long as I don't finish DFL I think there will be a real sense of accomplishment!

There was no sand running last year - and transition was in the parking lot. It was a really nice run, as I recall, flat, and the bike course is lovely. It's a really nice place for a first olympic.

So the Sprint is sold out, still space in the Olympic. Tried to get my first Tri done in Guelph last weekend but weather turned it into a Duathlon.

What do you guys/gals think about doing an Olympic as a first Tri? Last weekend was a 3K run- 30K bike-7K run.  Felt pretty good after too.  Haven't done any open water swimming in ages, but did 1.6K in the pool today in just under 30 minutes all arms. Good work out! Would hate to not finish or to totally overdue it and not enjoy myself?????

TEMPTED!

hmmm... the search for my first Oly continues....! Tongue out

Yay I finished my first TAT! It was soo much fun, and I can definitely see how people get addicted to this sport!

The water was so cold since I didn't have a wetsuit. I barely wanted to put my face in because the temperature was knocking the wind out of. But I still managed to keep up in the swim even when I was doing breast stroke and trying to stay as far out of the water as possible! I saw one man in a lot of trouble (had to be rescued by the kayak) - that was scary!

I realized that in order to bike well you have to actually practice...so the bike was WAY harder than I thought it would be, and I got passed by everyone. This is the thing I really want to work on for next year.

The run wasn't so bad once I got going but it was torture at first...I barely had any legs left beause of how much I struggled on the bike.

I didn't finish DFL and I had sooo much fun, so I met my goals for my first ever TAT! I will be doing more next year for sure!
