bigr82 - 2011-01-23 5:49 PM Gary, not for sure how the weather is treating you But here in IL we are all stuck inside  BOO.  Its almost getting crunch time hahaha.

We have had some cold, rain etc but nothing too horrible (moved here after living in WI for 10 years).  Running hasn't been a problem but riding outside has been a bit cold and more than once have just hit the trainer.

How did you like it last year?  I heard the swim was a bit choppy.

Last year this time I was training for Florida 70.3 and got nailed in  the run ( I peak about 3 weeks to early). So now I am taking it nice and slow and steady and focusing  on build up volume so my body can adapt to the stess load better and have less injuries. Happy training

The run at Florida 70.3 got me last year too, but I think it was just the heat.  I couldn't simulate that kind of heat training in the weather.  I'm hoping New Orleans is not that hot although I hear it will be humid.

I am not a Florida native so I can't compare but NOLA was hot and humid last year.  Not as horrible as Louisiana can get but the run wasn't pleasant (and I live in Baton Rouge).  Just depends on the weather that day.

As for the swim, 2010 was a bit choppy which got worse for the later waves (no pun intended).  Evidently the year before was very smooth water.

Hello,

I am looking forward to this race, it will be my first 70.3 and we are visiting my folks in Slidell. Just wondering, how humid and hot should I expect it to be in April. I have lived up in the Chicago area for so long now that I have forgotten. Just trying to get all our schedules together and allow some time to acclomate.
Thanks,
Jim

I actually looked at the past 5 years of weather for April 17th earlier today, so you are in luck.  In 2006, New Orleans set the record high at 92 or so.  Outside of that year, the averages for the past 5 years were mid-70's for the high, upper-50's for the low and upper 70% for humidity.  But on the bright side, it never rained!  Hope that helps!

Thanks for the information. We just got nailed by a major snow storm, so I would welcome some heat and humidity. Anyhow, I hope that getting there the Wednesday before the race will be sufficient.

Gary,
You have any suggestions on good places to eat before/after the race.  The wife and I will be down in NOLA for the first time, staying a few extra days.

Not the person to ask as I live in Baton Rouge and don't get to NOLA that often.  Hopefully someone else can chime in.  Sorry.

Yep, hot and humid last year but the aid stations were stocked well, even for this BOP racer.  I used a running hat and at the aid stations dumped ice in it and put back on my head.

Alright I am signing on to the thread.  I am signed up and ready for NO.  It will be my third half and I will be using this as a B race.  I will be racing Lake Placid for my first Iron Distance race later in the year.

Potentially in for the swim leg of a relay.  Did this one back in 2009 and loved it.  I was in one of the earlier waves and I guess I missed the water shortage.  And if anyone is worried about the weather where you live, I only did three major outdoor rides getting ready for it.  All trainer.  A lot of trainer.  Way too much trainer.  But the point is, you can get ready for this one on your trainer if you're iced in.

Is there still free Abita at the finish and the post race party?  That's really all I'm concerned about.

What part of the city are you staying in? One of the best things about New Orleans is you can probably get a better sandwich at a corner gas station than you can get in another cities best sandwich place.

Downtown, before the race: try Johnny's po boys on St. Louis. Another good sandwich place is Mothers on Poydras.

If you want to try some oysters, avoid ACME Oyster House.  It's a tourist trap.  You can the same or better oysters acorss the street at Felix's or next door at Bourbon House. If you like Steak, Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse is one of the better options downtown.  For Italian, try Cafe Giovanniwhich is a 1/2 block off Canal Street.  After the race, a wonderful hamburger can be found at Port o Call.  It's on Esplanade, which is walkable from Canal Street.

As for wind, it wasn't a factor for me last year.  Fairly flat course, a few overpasses as I remember but yes a flat course.

Hope everyone's training is going well.  Run and Swim are going well for me but haven't had a lot of long distance rides and need to get those in soon.

First year it was.  The good part about the wind that year was that it laid Pontchartrain down flat.  It was pretty brutal on the bike, though.

Just have to jump in and add a few although the ones named are some of my all time favorites
Venezia's on Carollton -   great Italian also
If you like muffalatas Central Grocery on Decatur has the best around
For really fine dining- Restaurant Bayona is fabulous- on Conti

Could recommend tons more if I knew where you were staying, if you were looking for fancy/expensive versus down home/affordable. My husband and I are born and raised who dats and love to enjoy the cuisine- lol.
Hope you have a great race and if I can help any other way, feel free to let me know. I love New Orleans and all it has to offer,

hth,

Shelly

We are staying in one of the Comfort/Quality suites right  down on Baronne St.  Looks to be a handfull of blocks from Bourbon st.  We are just trying to find a few more local type places, to get a taste of the local culture.  Everyone keeps saying some of the small places have GREAT food.  Thanks for any advice!!

We are staying at the Intercontinental on St. Charles Ave.  Any restaurant recommendations would be appreciated.  Also anything for the family to go see while I'm checking out the course Friday and Saturday would be appreciated.
