Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5am. Got dressed, ate a peanut butter bar and drank some water. Aired up my tires and double checked everything. Met up with my friends in front of our hotel at 5:50am to ride over to the event (maybe a mile or so away).
Event warmup:

Basically the ride over. Then standing in the starting area for 45 minutes probably negates most of that, though.

Comments:

I went out WAY too hard. My friends got separated from me and I thought I saw one of the guy's jersey ahead of me, so I went after him. Once I caught him I realized it wasn't him. It took about 10 miles for them to get back up with me. Somehow, I stayed up near the front with the hammers, doing 22-26mph the whole way. Entirely too hard/fast for my fitness.

I had an absolute blast, though. Yes, there's plenty of times you think about SAG wagons, short cuts home, etc., but when you turn on to the Sheppard Air Force Base and ride through the flight line seeing all the planes on display for you, watching the pilots wave to you (and fully open to having riders come up and ask question/get pictures), you easily forget about the pain for a bit. And just before you exit the AFB, there's a long line of Air Force Members lining either side of the road cheering you on like you just won the Tour de France, high-fiving you, etc...THEY are they ones who deserve our cheers. Very inspiring.

The event is EXTREMELY well organized and supported. Every rest stop has more fruit, water, powerade, etc. than you could possibly need. And everyone is beyond friendly.

Warm down:

Ride back to the hotel.

Great job!  I didn't know there was a 50 mile option until after the race.  I might ride it sometime just to end up at the air force base - I've heard it is amazing.

It got pretty hot out there towards the end - hope you kept cool!

Thanks! Yeah I had a lot of fun. I wasn't ready for a 100 mile route, so chose the shorter one. The 100k, 50mile, and 25mile all go through the base, so take your pick next time.

The heat did get pretty tough later in the day. Luckily I got done with my shorter ride at about 10:30 or so.

I'll have a short youtube clip of the base portion of the ride shortly.

I'm stationed at the base and it's our pleasure to put that on.  I rode through for the first time last year, very emotional from the perspective of being on the bike.  Great job!
