OK. So how many of you actually work out close to during or after mid-night? I'm talking to the people that are waking up at unGodly hours of the AM, spend more time with your co-workers, more than friends and family (combined). Come home to chores, screaming kids (and sometimes SOs), then realize that you can't go to sleep yet cause you need to put in those miles to stay on your tri "schedule" (that's a funny one).

I've been doing a few mid-night runs lately and there are pros and cons to it.
PROS
1) I have the roads/sidewalks to myself
2) Less obstacles (people), to avoid
3) No one is awak at home to tell me to keep running straight to the bathroom cause I stink from my sweaty run (wife)

CONS
1) I don't know if the roads are more dangerous at mid-night or while everyone is rushing to get home (regardless of who's in their path)
2) Despite the good neighborhood I live in, I'm one to run with a sizable knife in my hands (you know, in case of bear attacks....in NYC)
3) No one is awake at home to jump on and spray my sweaty self or hug to hear them scream at the top of their lungs in disgust (wife)

Let's hear from our mid-night work out freaks. Feel free to add to the pro and con lists

I usually do my swims after 10pm. I swim for about an hour....get home around 11:30-midnight....

I used to worry about not being able to sleep because I'm usually pretty awake after I workout....but since I don't go to sleep until 2am anyway it's no big deal...

I've done a couple of late night run/bike and I liked it very much.  I've done late night swims too but that doesn't count for these purposes. Nothing better than swimming in the dark.

I believe they call that "skinny dipping-after several cocktails."

Ssshhhhush. It was wine. No thread hijacking! (I thought he was referring to cross-training judging by the title).

Late night cross training?! All the time. Nothing like going home exhausted after a hard workout, going to bed then waking up at 2am...have to fit it in sometime!

???

My head hits the pillow between (I am not kidding here) 8:30 and 9. I am up at 4:30 and out the door by 5 but still.. midnight.. I just could not do it. Not on a bet. The thing that scares me most about doing an Ironman is I will be up past my bedtime.

WOW! I wish I had those hours. I gladly would sleep earlier but life dictates otherwise. My typical schedule is something like:

5:30-6:00AM - either run or swim (depending on day)
Life, work, family, etc.
10:00-11:00ish (sometimes 12:00-ish) - either weights or bike (bike at night in case of a blow out, so I won't be late for work and such)

LOL....I'm familiar with this concept. Solid workouts the last couple of days, but not enough sleep, light 1500 yd swim last night, plan for early bed to rest up for a 1500 yd speed workout AND a 10 mile run scheduled for today. What happens? Can't resist a cross-training/tire change and I'm up until 12:45!!

I work ft job, get home, play with the boys, do the chores(bath, pj's, brush teeth, etc), get them to sleep by 8 and I drift off by 9PM. Up at 1AM to deliver papers, usually done around 4AM and get my workout in be it bike/run, then swim usually at lunch. When I need to ramp up the volume for a oly or such, I'll get up at 12, get a good hour+ in before papers, deliver, then continue. Sucks having a second job, but such are the economics right now. I think I spend too much time on the forum...

I enjoy late evening work outs as well, but if I'm doing a 11pm or later workout, I'm sleeping until 8 or later. I can't imagine getting only 4 or 5 hours sleep when I'm NOT working out. I am definitely not a morning person.

Between 11:30-ish and 5:30-ish. Can't you see the huge gap of free time there?

Other advantages of midnight runs:

by midnight, the temperatures should have dropped well into the lower to mid 90's.

there is incentive to get some interval training in as you dodge the drunk drivers who are trying to figure out what that funny bouncing reflection on the roadside is.

the wife is already asleep so she can't see you drink out of the bottle in the refrigerator when you finish up.

and you can keep a tally of how many laps around the neighborhood you've run on the neighbors dirty PT Cruiser (not that I have ever done that....)
