National Weather Services Duties Act of 2005 (Introduced in Senate)

I get my hurricane info straight from the source - noaa.gov. It's free (taxpayer funded,  actually) and simple and lacks all the drama and nonsense that our various TV stations like to hit us with. I receive weather updates via email. They even have an RSS feed.

Rick Santorum wants to change that. Senator Stupidhead is concerned that commercial weather companies aren't dipping into my wallet. He wants to stop NWS and NOAA from providing this information to the public. He wants NWS to provide this information to commercial ventures who would then provide this information to me and the rest of the public ("Data, information, guidance, forecasts, and warnings shall be issued under paragraph (1) through a set of data portals designed for volume access by commercial providers of products or services..." )

I really dislike this idiot and any other politician who thinks their job is to pimp for private enterprise.

Dammed that weather service, for actually contributing to the public good! Half the time the Weather Channels local forecast is wrong, and I really dont care that they have a reporter standing at the eye wall of a hurricane. I just want to know whether or not to bring an umbrella to work tomorrow!

I cant stand that guy as well, for this and other political reasons

What a coincidence. I received my e-letter from my Senator, Bill Nelson. He likes to keep his constituents up on all his good work.  Here's an excerpt about this very topic:

Keeping Hurricane Forecasts Free and Accessible
The National Weather Service (NWS) website got nine billion hits in the
six-week period last summer when Florida was repeatedly hit by hurricanes. A
bill introduced into the Senate would prohibit federal meteorologists from
competing with companies who offer their own forecasts through paid services
and ad-supported Web sites. If this bill becomes law, the NWS may have to take
down websites like this one http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ that predicts tropical
storms.

I talked with some NWS forecasters just before Dennis struck. They told me
about a private forecasting company based in Pennsylvania that had been
tracking Dennis, too.  But that company predicted Dennis would go into New
Orleans or Mississippi, whereas the NWS tracked that storm to the area between
Pensacola and Ft. Walton Beach-exactly where it made landfall.  If we did not
have the NWS prediction available and had to rely on the other forecast, the
people of the Gulf coast of Florida may have let down their guard, with
disastrous results.

What do you expect from a guy who says that giving same-sex relationships the same legal status as heterosexual relationships would open the door to pedophilia and bestiality?

I expect more private enterprise pimping.

These people are really very unAmerican. It's disgusting. Oh well, they'll be gone, back under their rocks in a few years.
