I have done sprints and olympic tri's before....should I bite the bullet and start training for a 1/2 IM or should I put some more training in and do a few more sprint olympic tri's, and some open water swimming? I know I will not place if I do (as my fast friends tell me "I make slow look fast"...which I respond to those people that "I make slow look sexy!") but I am on the brink whether to start training or not for one. |

Subject: RE: Am I ready for a 1/2 Ironman? Sounds like you have the proper base to start training for one. But the real question is if you are able to commit to the additional time and finances for a HIM. |

Master 3888 Overland Park, KS | Subject: RE: Am I ready for a 1/2 Ironman? I think your question is a common one, maybe not in those exact words. I myself am asking MYSELF a similar question. But the real question is .... am I ready to TRAIN for a 1/2 IM? Currently I'm not ready, I need to train first. But what does "ready" really mean. It means different things for different people. For me, "ready" means finishing in the top 3rd, better than MOP, something like that. I race more to compete rather than complete. I read some race reports and see some swim paces of 2:30/100yds, some bike paces of 16-17mph and run splits of 11-12 min/mile. I've only done sprints, just completed my 2nd year and I can probably finish a 1/2 IM today at those paces. So to some, I am ready. I would say your ready to start training for sure. But the time/$$$ commitment must be there if you want to be ready on race day. My $0.02 worth |

Regular 124 Gurnee, IL | Subject: RE: Am I ready for a 1/2 Ironman? Do both. First - make up your mind - do you want to do a 1/2? If the answer is yes - pick one - say for example 6-9 months out - set that as your A race. During your training for that - do a couple of sprint or Oly distance races as preparation, training or as fitness tests to see how you are progressing. Your swim prep looks like you can put in maintenance mode for a 1/2 - with just the basics you've given here, would think some longer bike work, and some running off the bike are probably in order. Good luck - let us know how we can encourage you! |

Elite 4583 | Subject: RE: Am I ready for a 1/2 Ironman? I am in the same boat, however I have already committed to IM Boise 70.3 on June 11, 2011. I did a sprint Aug. 21, running a half marathon on Saturday and then I'm taking a 'training' break for a few months. I will still run, bike, swim to keep fitness but won't follow a plan. Around Dec./Jan. I will fully commit to a HIM plan, hopefully get in another sprint or Oly in the spring and do the HIM in June. My family supports me, I know I can carve out the time to train so it doesn't effect family time, I can afford it and once I set a goal, it's in stone. So...Boise here I come! |

Sounds like you are ready, if you want to put in extra training time. You can do what I'm about to do. I'm doing a long sprint(almost olympic length) Tri on Sept 11th, then doing a 1/2 Marathon on Sept 18th. If both go pretty well, and I enjoy both, then I'm definitely signing up for a HIM next year! |

Maybe? Really cannot answer unless we know if your logs are up to date ... if they are then you are not ready. But assuming they are not realize Most HIM training plans range from 8-12 hours a week of s/b/r. If you are ready to put in that time commitment and have about 20 weeks to train then you can do it. And it also depends if you are planning to race the HIM or just finish. If you can answer those questions then you are good to go! |

New user 74 | Subject: RE: Am I ready for a 1/2 Ironman? The training time is going to take up a lot more time than you think. Look at a HIM training plan and make sure you are able to dedicate yourself to it. You may think, yeah i can plan around the workouts. But, remember the workouts are day in and day out for 18 weeks or so with no letting off. |

But the real question is if you are able to commit to the additional time and finances for a HIM. What additional finances? You mean the race fee? Other than a couple boxes of GU and the race fee, I didn't spend an extra dime getting ready for my HIM. Time on the other hand, no getting around that! |

Veteran 191 Husk, NC | Subject: RE: Am I ready for a 1/2 Ironman? Am I ready for a 1/2 Ironman? Yes......you are ready to start training for a HIM. Your swim is where it needs to be in terms of distance, getting to 75-80 miles on your long rides won't take long, but your run will need a lot of work. Consider training for a half marathon 90-120 days from now. While training for the HM, do enough work on the bike and swim to just maintain your present general condition. Swim once a week and bike twice, leaving most of your focus on the run. Then, after the HM, you can jump into training for a HIM. |

Expert 2555 Colorado Springs, Colorado | Subject: RE: Am I ready for a 1/2 Ironman? A bit more training and you could certainly finish an HIM. Pick a race for late spring/early summer next year. During the interim see if you can do a metric century or even a century bike ride, and a half marathon race. That way you'll know what each segment feels like. All you would need to do for the HIM is bring it all together on one day. Whatever you do, don't do the bare minimum training volume and then have goals of doing anything other than just finishing - unless you have a huge base in all the sports. |

New user 394 | Subject: RE: Am I ready for a 1/2 Ironman? Thank you everyone for the input so far! Sounds like I need to up the running...sigh....running just isn't my favorite part sometimes. I have done a couple of 1/2 marathons before so I can start training for those again. I have been increasing my bike 5-10 miles every weekend so eventually (and once the weather here in Phoenix breaks) I am hoping to do a century ride one day. The big thing I need to find is time. Kind of tough with 2 kids under 5, work, and a wife that also trains for tri's and 1/2 marathons. Maybe this Sunday I will swim 2000 meters, bike 35-40 miles, and run 8 miles and see how I do. If I do okay I may start leaning towards a 1/2 IM. |

Regular 209 Flagstaff | Subject: RE: Am I ready for a 1/2 Ironman? I agree with the feedback you've gotten so far, you're ready to start training for it. Depending a bit upon the HIM you're planning to do I'd be inclined to focus slightly more on bike than the other two disciplines. You've got the swim distance, so you can maintain on the swim and be o.k. Run is fairly easy to train for - just keep slowly building your mileage. If your bike is solid then your run is going to be a lot easier. If your bike is weak it's going to ruin your run too. "It doesn't matter how good your run fitness is if you can't put it down on race day." |

Member 17 | Subject: RE: Am I ready for a 1/2 Ironman? Pretty simple answer, if you can competently finish one of the 16/20 week HIM training programs on this site, you can do a HIM. I was wondering the same thing, but as i got closer to the HIM event, i figured if you can get through the training, you can do the event. Good luck! |
