Sunny
Total Time = 2h 09m 26s
Overall Rank = 579/595
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 107/112
Pre-race routine:

Woke up early, bagel with PB. Half of a Clif bar en route along with water and Gatorade.

Picked up packet the day before so I got to transition early even though racks were numbered. Set up smoothly for never having done it in a race.
Event warmup:

Lots of streching and about 100 meter swim.
Swim
  • 18m 20s
  • 400 meters
  • 04m 35s / 100 meters
Comments:

Freaked out completely. I didn't feel nervous but completely forgot all of my swim training. Basically doggy paddled the whole thing. I stopped three ties to rest on the bouys. During the last 100m I might have done the front crawl for 10 strokes total. I really thought I was going to drown at one point.
What would you do differently?:

Practice endurance more...I stop too much in the pool.
Transition 1
  • 07m 33s
Comments:

T1 went fine. the slow part was trying to catch my breath after the crappy swim.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Socks and shoes were no problem. Wetsuit came off great!
Bike
  • 59m 47s
  • 15 miles
  • 15.05 mile/hr
Comments:

I passed many riders on the hills but lost it on the flats. I just didn't push hard enough. I was trying to finish so I had a very soft attitude. I could have pushed the flats much harder.
What would you do differently?:

Ride faster, try to push it more.
Transition 2
  • 05m 21s
Comments:

Pretty smooth. I use speed laces which helped a lot. Poured water on my head and neck.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 38m 23s
  • 5 kms
  • 07m 41s  min/km
Comments:

Walked wayyy too much. Could have pushed harder, even with the hills and the heat. Jeez, what a wimp!!!
What would you do differently?:

Run harder.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate bananas, bagels, drank Gatorade.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough training, poor swimming.

Event comments:

Loved every minute of it. My first triathlon is now in the books. Nothing but up from here. Seeing my wife and kids at the finish was more awesome than I thought it would be.

Way to stick it out and finish your first tri! I'm sure it wasn't easy to have a gut-check that early in the swim (seriously thinking you were going to drown?!) but you got it done!

CONGRATS on your first race!

It was very hot that day. If you look at my report, you can see how much the heat hurt me too. Good job to endure.

What's next?

Oshkosh on August 14. I just received the Total Immersion DVD in the mail. I started watching it last night. Swim confidence will dictate my next move but I'm planning on Oshkosh.
