Pre-race routine:

Woke up @ 5:30am, got ready and drove over to finish area, stood in line and waited for the bus. Headed over to Copperton to start area. Met up with an old friend from college, and some girls (on the Fat Boy racing team) I've run with in the past during our training runs.
Event warmup:

Light stretches (calves and quads) and some light running back and forth in the parking lot. Knee raisers to stretch and warm up the legs.
  • 1h 42m 51s
  • 13.35 miles
  • 07m 42s  min/mile

Probably went out a bit too fast - instantly got overconfident about my ability again and tried to hold a pace that wasn't sustainable for 13.1. Still, managed to make it all work out to hit my goal in the end, but I should have had a more consistent pace.

Took a gel around mile 7 - first time I've ever done that on a half, and it made a big difference. I'm definitely going to do that again next time. "Green apple" flavor was surprisingly okay.

Mile 1: 7:16
Mile 2: 7:08
Mile 3: 7:00
Mile 4: 7:12
Mile 5: 7:12
Mile 6: 7:35
Mile 7: 8:14
Mile 8: 7:57
Mile 9: 8:01
Mile 10: 8:05
Mile 11: 7:52
Mile 12: 8:36
Mile 13: 8:42
Mile .35: 7:17
What would you do differently?:

Pace myself appropriately so that I can have a more consistent run, and feel better through the entire run. Struggled a bit after about 10 miles.
Post race
Warm down:

More stretching, and congratulations to some of the other guys I was running with for most of the race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of proper training and overconfidence. It was short notice on this race so I really didn't have much time. Fortunately I have a good base, but I can't expect to shatter records if I'm not fully engaged in my running. Still, I'm very happy with the results.

Event comments:

This was a first year event, and all things considered, I thought it was pretty good. I definitely liked the course- most of it was on my training grounds, so I was right at home, and of course, the downhill makes it fast, which is great for a race. There were some problems with the buses -- some got lost -- but I imagine that won't be a problem in the future. I expect this race will become popular very quickly!
