Pre-race routine:

Nite before: Picked up race packet. Attended part of a Bach fest concert. Went to campground and packed race bag. Ate plenty of bread and drank water. Morning of: woke up about 6:00am. Ate more bread and drank Gatorade/water. Arrived at race ~7:00am. Race at 9am. Prepared T1. Laid out towel next to bike. socks in shoes inside out to wrap around rather than slide on feet. Practiced finding my spot with dirty feet, dumping water on them and shoving them in socks. Placed shirt on bike seat, helmet on handle bars, sunglasses inside. At ~8:15 began race warm-up
Event warmup:

Went to swim start. Went for a short swim, water felt slightly chilly but, no different than when I had practiced in open water. After swim warm-up felt tired and decided to eat two PowerGel packets before race. Stretched before race was to start. Race started late. Spent extra time wandering around keeping moving until race start.
Swim
  • 09m 56s
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 29s / 100 meters
Comments:

Began in last wave of swimmers. Too many people. I kicked people and was kicked by people. Swam faster in general than those I started with.
What would you do differently?:

Begin in a heat faster than me so I don't have to dodge people to swim at the pace I want.
Transition 1
  • 02m 15s
Comments:

Good for first time.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more to decrease time. Maybe not wear socks, but must try that out in training.
Bike
  • 45m 20s
  • 12 miles
  • 15.88 mile/hr
Comments:

More hills than I expected, but none that were too long to be challenging. Sometimes I pushed up hill only to find I was too tired to continue at that pace at top of hill. Passed several on the flat and was passed at the top of hill or on the way down the next.
What would you do differently?:

Prepare for hills and push past the top.
Transition 2
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

Almost missed the location of my stuff for T2. Had trouble getting bike racked because of too many bikes in the way.
What would you do differently?:

Shove other bikes aside sooner to make my transition faster. Not wear hat.
Run
  • 31m 26s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt extremely tired for run. For this reason my only goal for the run was to RUN the entire 3.1 miles. I almost stopped running a couple times, but continued. Didn't have enough energy to push it at the end until about 100m from the finish line. I was very surprised I ran the course in 31 min. My ideal was to run 11 min miles. I did much better than that. It gives me more incentive to continue practicing for coming races.
What would you do differently?:

Not wear a hat.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around. Eat a banana. Collect hat that I threw off to side just before finish of race. Drank Gatorade and ate bread and peanuts and cranberries I had brought. Then biked 1-2 miles back to start to pick up stuff from T1.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of endurance training for the run.

Event comments:

Great event for the first time. I completed the swim and run faster than my ideal times I had picked before the race. The bike time was just what I wanted. Transition times were good at well. Overall I completed the race 15min faster than my time that would make my pleased by my performance and was only 8sec slower than my ideal time. Overall, a really enjoyable time!!!
