Pre-race routine:

Woke up ate PB Beagle and some honey. Let the beagles out, they told me good luck when they got back in. 12 oz coffee on the 10 minute drive over. Loved being close.

32 oz gatoraide and 20 oz water during sit around time.
Event warmup:

Just warmed up the arms for the swim.
Swim
  • 32m 22s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

With the stroke change I decided I was going to go super easy. I didnt want to gas out and pop up to rest every 200. Kept an easy stoke most of the way. I veer right a little more this way. Got to the turn in bouy and thought wow this has been an easy swim. I wasnt breathing hard at all. Thought about hitting it hard on the way in but there was alot of traffic so just keep the same pace.
What would you do differently?:

Get some endurance with new stroke before the race? I should have pushed it a little more as I wanted to break 30. Hey Todd ITS A RACE swim harder. Swim a little more before running. Muck was DEEP like mid shin deep.
Transition 1
  • 03m 2s
Comments:

Great 300 yard uphill run to T1.
What would you do differently?:

Run a little harder.
Bike
  • 1h 22m 13s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.14 mile/hr
Comments:

Hilly course. I should have got a cassette with a 25 on it. 23 was a little much on 3 hills. Felt real good on the way out. Was at 20.1 at the half way. LT hammy was hurting on the way back. Not sure why. I know it really hurt a while back on a training ride but chalked it up to me accidentally moving my seat up. I thought I had it back just right. About 4 mi to go I got stopped at a light by the police. They were letting traffic go. I was stopped for 5:37. That would have gave me a 1:16:xx bike ~ 19.6. By the time were we let go there was a group of about 50 rides there. A few pretty grumpy folks. I liked the route but hopefully next year they can move things around on the bike course and so there are no stops.
What would you do differently?:

I think I hit my goals just about right. Drink all my bottle - check, GU at MI 20 - check. I think I could have pushed harder to hit 20 but the run would have suffered. (worse than it did)
Transition 2
  • 01m 29s
Comments:

Felt pretty good here. Took 3 times to rack my bike for some reason.
What would you do differently?:

Rack bike better.
Run
  • 1h 12m 49s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 11m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

I knew the start was going to be tough. 3/4 mi up a steep hill to start, a little relief then a 1/4 up hill. Got through that right where I wanted to be. Felt pretty decent. Then the wheels fell off about mi 3 I felt toast. Hit mi 3 at 30:33. I was getting light headed and a little dizzy. There were points I got chill bumps on my arms. Walked alot, tried to drink but the belly would have been too full. Did get stopped once but it was very short. I got about 1.5 mi left and ran the rest of the way in. There was a point where I couldnt squeezed my fingers to make fist like my forearms locked up. Really thought I could break 1 hour but it was a no go.
Post race
Warm down:

Iced towel, fluids and sat down. Needed to get teh head straight.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being good

Event comments:

So day before and all week I ate great. I had 3 32 gatoraide low cals and 32 oz water the day before from noon. 66 ish of fluids day of. I did pee 5 times before the race. I do notice my hr before the race is high 105-110 the whole time. I had 24 oz of fluid on the bike and a small cup water at all aid stations. I cant fathom how I was dehydrated. After the race pee was super bright glowing yellow so I know I was. It wasnt hot and I really didnt feel sweaty or hot on the bike. I need to figure something out. I did have fun. I felt like crap the rest of the day. Got home took a hot shower and was cold laying on the couch.

On a high note I did PR my 2nd oly dist race lol. Beat last year by 4 min. So there is my little ray of sunshine.

Nice job on the race.  Sounds like the run was a bit of a battle though.  And they stopped you on the bike?  I bet all those people in cars had no where to go anyways.

Nice job on PR Todd.  I have only been stopped once on the bike course so far and it wasn't much fun - sorry to hear it screwed up your time a bit.  Nice job grinding out the run.

Nice racing Todd!  Sorry to hear about the bike stop....if you didn't have to stop it would have been a 9+ PR.  I bet there was an angry mob.

great job on the PR even with the stoppage on the bike.  Wow that really sucks I can't believe they made you stop.  Isn't that what some of the money for the race entry is for?  Ie so that racers don't have to stop?  I'm sure they probably had lots of complaints.  Run sounds really tough, impressive that you pushed through it.

Congratulations on the PR and grinding out that run. I share your frustrations with dehydration. It sucks. New PR for next year?

Congrats on the PR! Sucks about the stopping on the bike, I would have been one of the grumpy people in the group Way to push through the uncomfortable run, should be able to fix the dehydration easily for next year!
