Subject: Swim Jammers or Aevero Tri Shorts?

I'm about to enter my off-season swim-focused program, which will involve 3-4 pool swims per week pretty much into tri season next year.  During my training this year I've destroyed several pairs of compression shorts (that were on the downhill side of life anyway, so no tears).  Since then I've been more or less swimming in my Aevero tri shorts, which have held up so far.

Any recommendations as to what to purchase or use going forward this winter?  Aevero tri shorts are roughly the same price as the name brand swim jammers so I'm looking for durability.

Thanks!

One pair of jammers could easily last you through the off-season, especially of you rinse them out after swimming. I don't know from experience, but have read on here that the chlorine is tough on the tri-shorts. This time of year, I'd look for jammers on sale- a larger places like Sports Authority might them cheaper than you can get the tri-shorts.

Avoid the words Lycra and Spandex for swim training trunks. After 3 to 6 months the shorts will be see through.

Look for the word Polyester or PBT as the only fabric in the jammers. They'll last literally years and still look brand new. Oh, they don't stretch quite as well as lycra so if you're in a tight pair of tri shorts, order a size up in the poly jammers.

They have LOTS of affordable options. Get POLYESTER ones.

The speedo Quantum jammers are a thicker, more durable lycra.
They last a long time, so if you like the comfort of stretchy lycra....

just a suggestion.

Personally- I don't want to ruin a good pair of tri shorts just for swimming- but then again- the aevero ones are really inexpensive.

Go for the polyester instead of lycra suits. Chlorine eats lycra for breakfast.

I highly recommend something from the Speedo Endurance line. I've had my square legs (shorter than jammers) for a while now, and even after swimming in the over-chlorinated pool I regularly use they still look like new. Cost a little more, but they won't wear out as quick, so cheaper in the long run.

I was just at my local Sports Authority and they have this years swimming jammers on sale for 20% off the lowest marked price.  For example, they had a pair of Speedo jammers that were regularly $45 marked down to $38.75.  You get the 20% on top of that price.  They sell Nike and Speedo.

FWIW I used to ride my bike to the pool, shower, swim and ride back to work, shower and work. I went through so many pairs of tri-shorts I decided to start changing into Jammers. It is worth the extra effort. I have had the same pair of Jammers for over a year and they look new. I could barely get 6-8 weeks out of the tri-shorts before my wife would start to comment.

Lycra/spandex seems to have the rubber stuff 'come out' of the base material within 6 weks like others have said. My Avero shorts have been in the pool several times and 10 weeks later do not seem to be coming apart like my last two other brand pairs.

Now they are only $19 I may get another pair for swimming.

I second the speedo endurance jammers... polyester

Lycra will turn see-thru if you swim in chlorine for very long... so watch out!

I recommend getting a pair of polyester jammers like these I got from Swim outlet. I used them 3X per week in the pool for two years and they look like new. Just rinse them out after each use.

+1 on the Speedo Endurance. My Tri shop had a pair in my size in the clearance rack.  So far they have out lasted my other pairs.

I must be lucky.  I get a year out of my tyr or speedo lycra jammers- swimming 2-3 times/wk.
But the pool I swim in is 'clorinated' with salt.  It doesn't taste salty- so I'm not sure exactly how it works- but I guess it does.

My Orca Tri shorts just 'seem' like they wouldn't last nearly as long.  they're thinner and slicker- so I only use them for races.

x2, I got a  pair of TYR polyester jammers after going through two pair of Lycra jammers.  My TYR jammers still look new and are 1.5 year old.  That is swimming several days a week.
