I just carry a small hand-held LED flashlight.  Since I run on the sidewalk, I don't worry about wearing a reflective vest etc...

Do you never cross the street?  I run on the sidewalk but most of my close calls come crossing the street (usually people coming up to turn right beside stopped lanes of traffic that I'm crossing in front of at a light (where I have the walk light).

I guess I live in a pretty rural area.  I only cross the street one time each way and can run up to 12 miles round trip without another intersection.  The crossing is on a pretty lightly traveled road and I can see the cars from a long way off.  My biggest worry is coming across an angry racoon or wild pig.  You make a good point, if you cross a lot of streets, might be a good idea to wear something that is reflective.

Or if you live in my neighborhood where people seem to prefer driving on the sidewalk, in the bike lane, or anywhere other than the standard car lane.

Solid white light on my front belt - blinking red light on the back of my fuel belt, and reflective wrist/ankle bands.  Run facing oncoming traffic.

All of my running routes involve at-least some off-road/trail work. I just picked up a headlamp that I'm very happy with. The lower settings are great for being seen while conserving the battery, but when you really need to see where you are going, the high-beam is very impressive for a little headlamp.

Yes!  I just got this one as well.  Really enjoy it so far.  I got a great deal on it at Sports Basement in San Francisco if anyone is interested on picking one up.

Wow!  I can't even fathom such a stretch without crossing another road.

I use the Blackburn Fleas that I bought for my bike for running also.  I took a free race hat, cut a few slots in the bill for the velcro strap and attach the white light up top and clip the red light to the back.  Having the headlight above the bill helps with keeping some of your nightvision.  There are also low, high, and blinking settings that can be used depending on where I am on the run.

I wear this jacket that is so bright orange it blinds you. It also has reflectors and a clip on LCD light.

Living in a rural area but on roads with a decent amount of traffic during the morning and evening hours when I run I wear a reflective vest and a headlamp with a flashing red light on the strap on the back of my head.  I have a Princeton Tec Fuel headlamp and haven't had any issues with bouncing.  If it's not quite dark enough to need the light to see the road I'll put it on flashing.
