Subject: 1 sprint before Xmas - St Kilda or Elwood?
Hey,

I plan on doing just 1 sprint race before Christmas, and being new to Victoria and not knowing the courses, is there any sort of preference to doing either St Kilda (Gatorade Race 1 on Nov 21) or Elwood (Race 2 on Dec 12)

Thanks
Nigel

Hi Nigel.
I'm no expert and I can't even remember the Elwood course. But, the StKilda is a great venue. The course is pretty flat. And there is always that silly bay wind. But tha goes for both of them. I like The Stkilda one tho.

Both are pretty flat. The venues would be maybe three km apart. There's little difference course wise. I always think it's a bit nicer swimming at Elwood. At least you're not swimming at the dog beach like at the St Kilda venue!

Elwood gives you more time to train and the possibility that the bay will be 0.03C warmer. I hope you have a wetsuit!

Thanks ladies!
The dog beach sounds wonderful....  I went and looked at the course maps online and they are pretty close by aren't they?  Thought they might have been further apart.

I do have a wetsuit - but wasn't sure about wearing it for just a 500m swim, but then again, if it's a chilly ocean I might have to!

Doing Elwood would let me concentrate on riding more hills for an extra few weeks without the tribars on the bike, but doing St Kilda would give me an idea where my winter training has got me!

Decisions........  but definitely planning on doing Sandringham Oly though!

Oh and with Elwood it's a touch easier to park (if you don't live nearby). St Kilda + car = nightmare. Just sayin'

With the wetsuit requirements, I'll probably be driving.... no wettie = a ride in.
I'll see how my thoughts go over the weekend

Wish I had read this before I did the race today...

Swam without a wettie, frightened myself dunking my head under the cold water, inhaled, and promtly chucked it up.
I'm getting a wetsuit for Christmas

Not that that's going to help me putting my head in the cold water... :P

Did you decide which race to do???

Ooof - not good!
I decided to do the Elwood race, but will definitely be using the wetsuit, even though it seems strange to have to use one for only 500m.
Did you manage to work through the cold OK?  How did it go?

I think swimming in open water in Victoria takes a little preparation... you first experience reads a lot like mine   I took to swimming on the weekends down at Williamstown to get used to it as part of my race prep... not something you want to be doing through the winter though!

I got used to the cold eventually. Breathing every two strokes instead of 4 or 5 like I normally do, things like that.
I was cruising by about the 200m mark, apparently the water temp was like 18deg?

And it was not my first open water swim, lol, I just didn't expect it. It felt so warm, right up to my chest! Lesson learned head dunked in warm up!

Certainly was cool in the water at St Kilda, I had the honour of doing the water temp being a TO, got an average of 16.4, however did hit one spot on the swim course for the shorter race with a 13.5 reading.

If the weather keeps up like it did on the weekend, should see the bay warm up in the next few weeks to around the 20 mark.  Not sure if it will be enough for the Elwood race though.

Elwood would be my choice of the 'bayside' race venues though, good parking compared to St Kilda, don't have an extra 'run' leg like at Sandingham and less chance of it being turned into a duathlon like at Mordialloc.

Went out to Elwood this arvo to test it out - was a bit nippy but not as cold I was expecting.  For the sake of 500m it seems a bit of an effort to get the wettie out, but I'll be bringing it along just in case I change my mind......
