Subject: Cold weather cycling gear?
Well, the morning chill has set in, and I have 5 more weeks until Phuket. That means quite a few more long chilly rides. Rides where the temps are in the mid-low 30's and dark. I'm looking mostly for some advice to keep my feet from freezing. Everything else is managable. I already have the wool socks and bootie covers, but they are just not cutting it. I've tried the little heated inserts, but they only seem to maintain their heat for about 30 minutes.  I'm sure that there are people who train outside all winter long, so how do you not freeze?

I bike commute throughout the year in temps down to -20C and I just use shoe covers like these:

Combined with a good pair of socks, my feet stay nice a warm.

They are from a Canadian company called Mountain Equipment Coop.  Their website is http://www.mec.ca.

Rule 42 is eventually going to be a problem.

A short term solution I have used is plastic sandwich bags.  Just slip them over your socks to cover your toes.

This is not a good long term solution because the plastic bags don't allow moisture to escape, but if you just need them to get through the first hour of a ride or something it's a great trick.  And cheap.

I have Pearl Izumi shoe covers that are made out of wind proof material that are good and keep my feet warm when it is 20 and above and I've done 3-4 hour rides in the 20-30 range. I wear smart wool socks as well.

Keeping head, hands and feet warm are always the most important parts to keep warm.

I'm one of those freaks who rarely gets cold feet or hands, but I didn't know this until the past few years.   Previously, I always thought that I had bad circulation in my feet because they were ALWAYS the first part to give in to the cold.  Turns out, my shoes were too tight.  My feet are borderline too wide for my shoes anyway, so you add in that extra thickness from a wool sock and it messes with my circulation.

Moral of the story?  Make certain that you have PLENTY of room in your shoes - even if it means wearing a thinner wool sock.  Block the wind and water from the outside and make sure you have lots of room on the inside and you'll be amazed at how well your body can keep your feet in good working order.

Another trick of the trade is to wrap some clingfilm around your socks before you put on your cycle shoes. Surprisingly it's very effective!Smile

Yup. Tried that before - and the sandwich bags. Absolutely didn't work for me. I really appreciate all the suggestions though. I'm willing to try anything as I absolutely HATE having freezing cold feet. Not to mention the fact it feels like two giant bricks on the ends of your legs when leaving on the run. Yesterday was painful. Literally.

Those look alot like the ones that I have. Is there any fleece or anything by the toe area to insulate or is it just the fabric? Yesterday's ride started in the low 40's (we very fortunately got a warm morning!) and I didn't lose my toes until we got nearer to the mountains and the humidity increased and temps dropped, but it will only be a couple more weeks until we're starting in much colder and my toes will be gone in the first 30 min.
