Pre-race routine:

Very cold at the beginning. I got there early and kind of hung out to see you other people placed their transition stuff. I ate 2 pieces of toast w/ honey and cinnamon sugar after I woke up. I ate a small cliff bar about 45min before the race.
Event warmup:

A little stretching and 100 yards in the pool.
Swim
  • 07m 16s
  • 400 meters
  • 01m 49s / 100 meters
Comments:

The staggard start and snake swim was interesting. Alot of people were not honest at all about their swim time (to line us up in order). I actually should have been more agressive in my time because I was swimming faster than practice. I gave them a 7:40 for my est. swim time and I was given number 186. There was a guy that had a number in the 70's that swam 50 meters, was dog paddling at the end of the 50, and couldn't go any further. He caused quite a traffic jam. I passed several people in the first 200 meters.
What would you do differently?:

I started out a little too fast. The first people I passed were kind to let me go by at the turns and there were no major problems. I got stuck behind someone slower at about 300 yards and really wiped myself out trying to figure out how to pass him, and because the lanes were crowded at then end, I ran into a few people. I probably wasted alot of energy and should have just stayed back. I was very exhausted at the end of the swim.
Transition 1
  • 03m 9s
Comments:

No major problems. The jog to the transition area from the pool was cold given that it was in the 50's and I was running wet. Mounting on my bike went well.
What would you do differently?:

I meant to get my HR strap on but forgot until the very end. Ended up just skipping it.
Bike
  • 1h 03m 59s
  • 18.6 miles
  • 17.44 mile/hr
Comments:

Spent the first 10 min trying to get my breath and recover from the swim. I ate a Gu pack and drank some gatorade. Eventually got my breath and got myself to a good pace. Passed a few people. Got passed by a few people.
What would you do differently?:

Buy a road bike. Train more for the bike given it is more than half of the event.
Transition 2
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

Went really well. Got my bike shoes off and running shoes on quickly.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 23m 17s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs were very stiff as expected for the first 3/4 mile. I was definately running slower. I also had to go to the bathroom at the beginning (starting at the end of the biking). Luckily that feeling eventually went away. I pushed the last 2 miles pretty hard. I could have pushed a little harder perhaps, but I was pretty spent at the end.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

A little strethcing, alot of food and water. AND A PORT-A-POTTY!!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

And extra couple of hours on the bike would have helped but I was very please overall.

Event comments:

One thing that was pretty interesting is that it is actually pretty lonely out there. Perhaps it was this event (b/c of the staggard swim start) but you really don't see many competitors out there on the bike and run parts of the race. Very little crowd support (unlike 1/2 marathon and marathon). So it is really a mental game b/c of the lack of perceived competition out there.

Great job, Scott. Your running time was fantastic coming off the bike. I found my legs wanted to keep spinning for the first 1/4 mile.
Nice work!
