Finished dinner tonight and asked the little ones what they wanted to do. My six year old wanted to go on a bike ride and the three year old is going for a run. she has covered almost a mile going up and down the block and he will cover 2-3 riding the neighborhood with mom. They didn't ask for tv or video games they want to run and bike like dad.

I haven't got that type of response out of my kids yet but I'm hoping it will change soon.

Buying the new TT bike should help, since now Mom or Uncle can hop on my old bike to go out too.

But my kids don't overeat so I'm happy about that. I drink diet Dr. Pepper all day unless I run out and they don't even like soda.  So, I got that going for me...

Keep up the good work.

setting a good example.

My 6 year old daughter keeps asking me to 'train' her, and wants to go on runs with me.

Thanks for bragging. I have 2 year olds and I can't wait until June when they are both three and will run their first splash and dash at Pacific Crest. A water slide, wading through some shallow pools, riding 1/4 mile and running 1/4 mile. It is even chip timed. I cringed a bit the first time I heard it cost $35 per entry but now I can't wait.

I really don't want to be one of those dads that shoves his kids into his sport but I can't say that I would be disappointed to eventually race with them.

That's awesome!  Trust me when I say to involve your kids as much as you can when they are little.  Before you know it, they're off doing their own thing.

Being a parent, I know how much that means to hear them say that!
Way to go!

Nice job!   My 9 year old daughter is desperate to do a kid's tri next year.  She's a good swimmer and rides her bike a lot.  We're doing a Turkey Trot 5k together at Thanksgiving - I guess she's about ready.

Very gratifying isn't it!

this past year -- I taught my 6 year old step daughter how to ride and swim -- became her step dad about a year ago and she really never had much of a father in her life  (so she was kinda behind the curve with stuff like this).   My wife took her shopping for school stuff and when it was time for sneakers she picked out new balance running shoes cause she said she wanted running shoes like daddy and wants to go running with daddy.   my wife is giving birth to our son next month.

my wife and my stepdaughter are both saying they want to try their first Tri next summer.

I will always support my kids in whatever they like to do and coach them, watch them, support them but hope to really not pressure them to do what i'm into -- although ofcourse i want to introduce them to it and push it on them a bit.  I just hope that being a good example through training and doing tri's it atleast make them active for life and fitness, exercise is a family staple.

That's fantastic . I'm having partial success on this front . Both my 13 yo and my 10 yo did a kids tri this summer . My eldest would be quite happy to never do another . My youngest on the other hand would have done more than one if we could have worked it in around his Football schd. This past Sunday, Halloween, he and I did a 5k run called the Monster Dash . It was awesome . I hope it becomes a new tradition .

Thats great!

My (as of today!) 11 year old daughter wants to run the Thanksgiving Day "Turkey Trot" race with me this year. Can't wait to have her out there with me!

I'm trying to convince her and her 7 year old sister to do the kids tri next spring at the local Y. Hope they do it.

As a parent of two, I love the idea of the kids wanting to go out.  Good for you!

My son, a three year old, calls it "exercising" and he even voluntarily did some pushups last week.  He sees me doing it and wants to join.

For the past few years my daughter and I have ran a local 5k together and this year my daughter, son and I ran together.  It's cool to have "our" race and no worries about time/performance, just fun.  My son thought the best part was throwing water on me at one of the aid stations.

That really is great!  I know you are proud.  I have 3 & 6 year old boys.  They have done some really short "fun runs" so far and they have been fun.  But my 6 year old ran his first mile the other day at the local high school track.  I paced him to keep him slow.  He was tired towards the end but he pushed through it which made me proud.  Thanks for sharing your story.

In Alaska they have weekly running "races" and my family participates in the Munchkin class. They are at a different local park and vary in distances, but the Munchkin class is typically 1-2 miles and the whole family is encouraged. The 2 yo runs some and rides in the Bob some while the 10 month old is in the Bob or strapped to an adult. The younger boys get REALLY excited about peeing in the woods. One starts and soon there is quite the party.

To all the parents whose kids flat out refuse to do anything athletic....don't fret.  As a kid my parents were very active runners and encouraged me to join them on a regular basis.  At that time in my life I couldn't have been less interested.  Now though, I'm scrimping my pay-checks so I get another hit of that triathlon goodness.
