I think you'll be alright for the 5k but you may have to run/walk.  You could probably run the whole race though if you back your pace down more than usual.  First find out what the doc says next week and see how the cardio is doing.  I would recommend doing some hard core circuit training to keep the cardio push strong.  Circuit training isn't running or riding but it can definitely preserve a lot of the cardio fitness you have already.

If nothing else, be the cheerleader for your husband and brother in law and seeing your daughter rowing is an absolute must for the weekend.

Keep your spirits high.  This will all be over before you know it.  Even of it takes longer than you want it to, it will be better in the end.  Once healthy you'll be able to stay with the training.  If you short cut the healing process now it could keep you from training again ever.

Question for you all:

By the time I'm training again, I will be biking outdoors!  Yea!!

I'm planning on biking 3x a week, but I'm wondering what distances you would suggest?  My race in June is only a sprint distance, but if my training goes well over the summer I'm considering an Olympic distance race in the fall.  If not, then next summer for sure.  I'm thinking that I will start out riding between 15-25 miles.  With a goal of 18mph average.

P.S.  What have you all been up to?  Get back on here and let us hear what's going on with your training.

Sounds like a solid plan to me, not sure I would do anything different. I think you would have plenty of time to be ready for the Olympic in the fall. Go for it !

Agreed.  There is plenty of time for you to get ready for an Oly.  If you are released from the doc this week and train properly, you could be ready for an Oly as soon as July for sure.

Are you talking about a race pace for your biking goal or training paces?  What are you riding?  A road bike, then 18mph is doable but if it's a mountain bike or hybrid probably not.  What kind of speeds were you capable of prior to the injury?

Totally unrelated to training but...................I have had enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I need a break from the monotony of ?????? for a while.  I am about to take off.  My blood pressure is up everytime I show up.

BTW, this has nothing to do with my wife and family either.

I don't really care about race pace. I would just be talking about finishing this season's races and getting some sort of baseline.  Next year, well then maybe I would worry about a race pace.  Over the winter I bought a tri bike.  It's a Felt S32 (see bike porn below).  I have pedals, shoes, cyclocomputer with cadence.  All set up except for water bottle.  Can't wait to get it on the road.  Soon, very soon :-)

Hot set of wheels.  And I guess that answers the question of what type of bike you have in a pornographic manner.  LOL

The weather is looking like things are going to heat up enough to get on the road soon.

Very nice bike! I'd say the distances and 3x a week are about right (though if you can spare more time and up it to 4x it'll benefit you more).
As for next planned race, it's either a pool based sprint on 17th April or an open water sprint 8th May.

Nice bike Jayne!  I am sure you two will be very happy together, travelling all sorts of miles!

I struggled last week to get even a 30 minute workout in..  I'm still fighting this head cold.  But I made turkey soup last night so it hasnt got a chance now!  Just got back froma 90 minute battle with ny deep tissue masseuse and he says my calves are stronger than my anterior tibialis muscle and the calf is actually pulling my foot down.......giving me all kinds of lower leg issues.   Luckily there is a fix.  Work out that shin muscle!

Today is the first day I feel halfway normal again.,,(ha! whats normal anyway?!)  I plan on a trainer ride a little later.

Have a great week everyone!

Jayne - Nice bike ...does she have a name yet? Or is it a he ?  You will be out there soon enough....

Serene - get well soon

Had a nice massage today. man was I tight. Decided to let the muscles rest, feel like I got a little beat up today. Have a long ride in the car tomorrow hopefully the muscles don't all lock up, may need another massage

Back to the regular work out tomorrow when I get home. Lots of travel this week going to need to move some things around to get it all in.

Hi everyone!  I took a break for a little bit, and I will make sure to catch up on all the posts.  Here is my update.  After my last PT session, which was a few weeks ago, I had thought that the PT was really not helping.  It seemed like it was only aggravating the strain (or whatever it was), and it was constantly the same throughout the duration I was going to PT, which was about 3 weeks.  So I decided to stop with that.  I haven't really done any physical activity over the past few weeks, and I can say that it definitely feels like there's improvement.  I don't feel like I'm aggravating that groin area each time I'm walk.  The problem is, I'm not sure if this is something that will heal on its own if left alone, or if it will always be there, persisting, and something which I need to get to the root of the problem.  So I am still considering perhaps check out an ART specialist, although I'm not sure how I will decide on that.  I will probably start trying to swim regularly, with the pull buoy, so as to not go through the kicking motion, because I do think that might have had something to do with the persistent slight aggravation.... At this point, I'm probably thinking if I'm still feeling some discomfort in April after this lack of activity, I'll probably go back to considering ART.  Sigh!  In the mean time, I will try to also start back up with some lifting...

wow- hang in there lady it could be something that will heal on its own if left alone.  let us know how the swimming goes.  does biking on one of those indoor reclined bikes bother the area?

I know I disappeared for a week or so. I've been doing a juggling act of life lol.  I took all of last week off from biking and running. I was having some minor pains in the lower legs. raced on saturday, did ok. did a full recovery day sunday. Went out yesterday morning and did 5 mile run.  My pains in the legs returned with a vengence. i did some research and it seems I might be fighting my first bout of ITBS. I iced it all day yesterday and took a hot bath, that seemed to help.... I've been running for about a year again. I have not even had issues with shins or other common runner ailments this time around. .... and this came on real sudden. I just got some new running shoes about a month ago....could this be a problem? anyways, I'm going to have to figure something out, guess I"m getting my first foam roller

jayne- awesome bike!!!!!!

Keep up the great work everyone, and let's try to get all healed up before the nice weather comes along.

Vegas was insane. wow. I didn't run nearly as much as I had wanted to, but it's vegas, right? I'm just going to look at it as a recovery week and start hitting it again this week. 32 miles is the goal. Going to hit the trainer up tonight for ~90 minutes after my run and project. A friend of mine has agreed to join me on a ride outside tomorrow morning, should be fun. I am going to try to hit 4-4.5 hours on the bike this week in preparation for a big build towards my weekend of fun in Snowshoe, WV (76 mile ride with 7000+ feet of climbing).

Samantha, its good to see you back in the mix here.  I hope you can get the injury figured out.  I admire you for sticking with it through all of the frustration you must be feeling.  That determination will make a difference if you are patient enough.  Hang in there.

Jessica, thinking about your running issue with the pain you are experiencing, you might want to back your mileage down some.  What have your longest runs been prior to the 5 mile run where you started having more significant pain?  I haven't checked your logs recently but I didn't think you had been running enough to allow a week or two off and then run 5 miles after an injury.  Be careful when your running mileage is kin of low and then coming back to run what could be a long run.

I took yesterday off (and it killed me) because my oldest daughter had her winter sports gathering at school.  They announce all the conference "elites" and other awards and then we eat and socialize for a while.  My daughter was all conference, a 3 year letter winner and selected as one of the hardest workers on the team.  She makes me very proud because of her work ethic.

I am hoping for a 6 mile run tonight with 2 miles at tempo.  If I don't figure out how to get to the pool tomorrow I will probably miss a swim this week and I won't like that much.

Tom, that ride sounds FUN!!! enjoy it!

Dirk, The longest run, was most likely 4-5 miles....about 2 weeks before this last one. right now five is my longest distance...I have ran further (in the past but for my race specific training I was working on tempo/speed intervals for the 5ks. I iced the knee and then took a hot hot bath plus some ibprofen and it has calmed down. I did run this morning and the knee bothered me from time to time, not horrible pain, just nagging. I worked on some form issues and kept the run at 2 1/2 miles. today the knee feels great, not even a tweak here or there, so I will keep the mileage down until the next race is over...

Good luck getting to the pool!!! I hate missing a swim. I had to skip last night because the pool was FREEEEEZING (70 F) so I did the spin class instead and loved it.

I got certified as a lifeguard last weekend. My masters coach recommended it, since I live at the pool lol. so I did it and the gym is going to hire me for masters and swim team help/coaching :D might as well make some money while I'm there all the time.

Hey Bruce, her name is "Red".  Not very original, but it works for me.  She and I are going to start getting to know each other VERY soon.  I'm sure we will have a long and intimate relationship.  :-)

I just got back from the doctor and have good news.  I have been released to start back into my training.  I can bike, run and EVEN SWIM!  The only instructions were to "go easy" starting back.  I still have to change a bandage on the right leg daily and wear a compression sock during the day, but that's nothing.

So, here we go!  Tomorrow 5am swim.  Wonder if I will remember how?  Three weeks seems like such a long time.

That is great news!!!  I am glad you can get back to the training.  Although I have to say I am a little bit nervous now.  Since we are going to compete in the same race in June, I don't want to get "chicked" by you.  Hopefully I will be in the swim wave behind you so I am already behind you and you can't pass me.

I did a tempo run for the first time since October tonight.  I couldn't decide whether I should do a 2 mile or 3 mile tempo. While I was out I decided for the longer distance and run 3 miles at a 7:05-7:10 pace.  I am hoping to use these upcoming tempo runs to get ready for another HM PR.  My goal for my next HM is a 1:35:00 or maybe a little better than that.  If I am successful for this race it will be a 3 minute improvement from last years HM.  I hope to get my tempo runs from 3 miles to 5-6 miles but that might be a little aggressive because I have only about 6 solid training weeks before the race taper.

Anyway, my paces for the 3 miles were 7:10, 7:06 and 7:02.  I was right in the neighborhood of where I wanted to be but I did have to stop once each of those 3 miles to get off the road and allow traffic to get by.  Normally this road isn't quite that busy but tonight was kind of bad for some reason.  I was happy with my effort overall but my body isn't happy with me right now.

I took a look at your logs and everything looks decent.  There are no problems that really stand out to me.  The only question I have is how hard did you run for your 5k race?  After a race that you tried to go all out, you might want to scale back your run mileage and/or intensity for the next week.  I tried to maintain a harder training routine after a 5k race earlier in my running "career" that had me reeling in some pain for a week or two.

Oh yeah, you are at the pool A LOT!

dirk, I think you are right about the 5k and trying to go hard monday morning. I did push really hard at that race....I was on empty when I finished....crazy hills! I am running another one this weekend that is FULL of hills quite a few 6-7% grades even one right at the finish! I have trained on the hills but not with any tempo runs.

Your tempo runs sound awesome! I am trying to talk myself into buying a fancy little gps/heart rate moniter so I can actually try to keep /hold an actual pace.

The weather here is getting so nice....but as usual WINDY . I met a couple of ppl at the last 5k who are bycyclists, so I finally found a group to ride with so with the the warmer weather on its way it is just in time!!

Sounds like some pretty hard races your are planning.  Northern Indiana is flat as a pancake!  When I was training for my marathon my 20 mile runs had a total climbing change of 1000 feet.  Then for my race I had 2000 feet in the first 5 miles or less.  With everything being flat here the wind is usually blowing so I know what you mean about those conditions.  You are going to have a HATE relationship with the wind soon.

I had to rush a swim tonight and ended 500 yards short of my desired distance because the lanes closed 45 minutes after I got there.  My main set was 2x500 and I feel like I nailed them decent at a moderately hard pace.  I checked the time on the clock with about 100 yards left and again with 25 left and knew if I hit it a bit harder for the final 25 I cold hit the wall at about 7:20.  I was dead on 7:20 when I touched.  This is significant for me because my last TT was 7:16 on Dec. 18 but I knew it wasn't really accurate because I had done several hard sets prior to trying to do the TT.  I had that kind of time and wasn't blown up.  I had more left that I could have used up had it been time trials.

Anyway, my goal was to be at or below 7:00 for my next TT which I intend to do mid April or early May, just a month or less out from my first tri of the season.  I am kinda stoked right now thinking about what my time might be.  When I do my next TT I want to have my daughter pace me so I will make sure I am challenged and not start backing off when I start to get tired.

Sold my road bike about 6 years ago and hadn't ridden it for a few years before that.  So, today's inaugural ride on the new Felt S32 was a long time coming.  She's a little squirrelly, especially when I'm down in the areo bars, but that will get better once I'm used to her.  I didn't think the area around my house was hilly, but I was surprised.  I'm sure it's nothing compared to the hills some of you ride, but I could sure feel each and every one.  I went 16.8 miles today.  At the half-way point my average speed was 15 mph.  When I got home my average was up to 15.75 mph.  I was happy with the second half being faster than the first and happy with the overall ride.  I have to admit this wasn't a "go easy" ride.  It seems my "go easy" button is broken.  :-)  Don't tell the doc, ok?  Hope you're all having a good weekend.

Nice looking ride today.  The weather was pretty good for an outside ride so I took advantage of it myself.

after 6 years of absence from the roadie that looks  pretty good.  And 15.5 mph is an awesome ride for not being on the road for so long.  There are many people who won't hit that speed on a bike ever.   Now just wait to see what you're going to be able to do once you have more outside time on "Red."  Did you get a fit or are you trying to workout all the positioning yourself?

The roadie's definitely handle different than riding in a aero position.  Things move much more quickly and you have to react more quickly with a little more control.  I don't have a TT bike but I do use aero bars on my roadie and there is a very distinct difference between the hoods, drops and aero bars.

Congrats on a very good ride!  You're a beast!  I think you can afford to go howlin' tonight.

________________

I had my own outdoor ride today that went very well.  i wanted to see if I had made any fitness gains over the winter training session and so far I think I might have made some significant gains but it will take a race to be sure.  The ride was just what I was looking for coming out of the winter session as far as distance and I now have a good base to build on for upcoming races and a HIM in 2012.

I have no areo bars but can imagine they are tough to get used to. Nice ride, I think you are going to kick butt on that bike. By the end of the summer you will be up close to your goal. You better get that "go easy" button fixed you may need it once in a while.

awesome ride! Funny how running or biking in a particular area will reveal those hidden inclines

I was really dreading my 5 k this weekend, due to some ugly sinus drainage and the hills.... Anyways, I ran my fastest 5k yet!!! 25:02 and I finished with all I had. That is a good feeling. 1st in age group and 2nd overall female (would have been first but could not get around that 17yr old girlie in front of me)...but I kept on her heels. Mentally I held back cause I knew the course was a hard one with quite a few kick butt hills and I wanted to finish strong. I'll get her next time
