kwynnc - 2011-03-08 2:07 PM did the first workout of the beginning to swim program (the 5 month program). Challenging enough to make me nervous, but not overwhelmed. Went pretty well, not graceful or pretty but was nice to have a concrete plan to follow at the pool.

There's no need to be nervous, just do your best and enjoy.

harlequinduck - 2011-03-08 4:24 PM I usually coordinate yoga with Biking or running to focus on stretching the hams and hips. Swam today before yoga and it seemed to warm the body for a great increase in flexibility. I plan to trial swim before yoga a few more times. Anybody have any insight?

Any warm up before yoga should be beneficial, unless it's a grueling effort and you've got no energy left. Warming up the muscles makes them more receptive to stretching. I ran to and from yoga on Monday and it felt good. Not so sure about the run back though... I wasn't motivated at that point to run more but I had no choice if I wanted to get home.

A great example would be today without a warm up before yoga and 2 days post intense run. Result-- flexibility not there today.

Someday, I shall no longer be sick, and will be able to start working out again. Or even walking -- I'll take that right now....

*Sigh*

Is it summer yet?

Another fight with form at the pool but this one I think I won. I beat my pace goal for the month of 2 min/100m with a 1:59/100m. Cut the swim short to 37 min due to goggles filling with water. Time to reward myself by getting new goggles and enjoy meeting my goal.

Ooohhh. Interesting idea. I many times have time for a swim before yoga. I'll have to remember this and give it a try sometime. Thanks for sharing!

You know, I have thought about the same thing. Yoga is close enough I could ride my bike. Would be good for getting there, but don't know that I'd have the desire to bike home. Part of the reason I do yoga is to really relax, and after that, I don't wanna exert any effort. I may give it a try this summer sometime though. I suppose if I were *mentally* prepared to ride home after, I could do it.

Oh, no. I'm so sorry you're still feeling yuck. This stuff seems to be hitting people hard and sticking around for awhile. Ugh. Spring is around the corner......hang in there!

Got the knee MRI results this week. Good news: I don't have any cartilage tears or floaters. Cruciates intact as well. Bad news: I do have arthritis at the proximal tibiofibular joint and of the patellofemoral compartment. Treatment: Antiinflammatories and PT. And learning to just live/deal with it. Running is not the best thing for me to be doing. And probably just starting to run at 51 with existing knee problems is pushing it more than a bit. However, I'm not giving up, I'm just going to scale down and refigure. I'm still going to run, just for shorter periods. I'm going to focus on walking more and trying to pick up my speed (I run and walk about the same speed). If I end up having to walk most of the run portion of the tri, so be it. Not the end of the world for me, as I'm not competing. Swimming and biking are still OK.

So, this week's workouts have been a little more low-key, but I'm still getting the time in. Didn't do the swimming this week though, and that's probably the thing I *should* be doing. Oh, well....

Looks like the workouts are progressing and people are doing well. Way to go everyone!! Even some of our sick, injured, and crazy busy are back at it. Yay!

Oh that's me! Injured, crazy busy & back at it!

My finger is almost all the way healed - I'm hoping that I can be back in the pool by the beginning of April :-D
The workshop that I was working on for the homeless teen's shelter went of without a hitch. It's impossible to think that you've got it hard or that you work hard when you meet these kids. They're all homeless or formerly homeless and currently applying to or enrolled in college. They are simply amazing.
Our big annual conference in DC went off this past week without a hitch - it was exhausting but amazing.

Oh yeah - I also got a new job Laughing I just found out last Wednesday so I don't have a ton of details, but I'm going to be a residential counselor for formerly homeless adults, many of whom have addiction, mental illness or chronic illnesses. I'm excited to finally have a job 6 months after graduating and I've even more thrilled that it's in my field and at one of my top places I wanted to work.

So all of this going on really has derailed me in terms of training, but I'm determined to get back at it. I picked up Triathlete magazine in the airport this week and that was really inspirational in terms of motivation (and who doesn't like to ogle cool new gear?). Saturday I went for a one-mile recovery-pace run/jog. It was raining, but nice to be out there moving after a day of sitting and sleeping on a plane.

I'll try to get some goals for March up soon.

If it's not too far of a distance it might not affect your relaxation too much. I found the 4km run took the relaxation and think that a 4km bike ride might be better.

Talk to your PT about a safe amount (distance/duration/speed) of running for you. At my clinic we just checked someone's form and made adjustments, something else that might be beneficial. Good form reduces chance of injury! Remember, wogging is always an option.

Two weeks left! How is everyone doing?

I went to my first hot yoga class Saturday March 5 and really enjoyed it. I've been doing yoga here and there casually at home but it's not the same as being in a class. I've done a total of 3 classes at this studio and off to do number 4 shortly. Yoga is a good thing for me because I hold on to stress too tightly, and I have lingering small injuries/potential injuries that I am trying to stop from getting worse.

Training is continuing and I have to be please that I'm moving forward with life's distractions. I'm looking forward to getting outside and started bike maintenance. I'm planning to upgrade to ceramic hybrid bearings for my rims this year.

Hot yoga. Heh. That name cracks me up.... Some day, I really need to figure out the difference between hot and not-so-hot yoga.

Hot yoga is done in a heated room so you stretch more easily... and sweat more.

I am sensitive to heat and luckily the studio that I tried it at makes it hot, but not crazy hot like some places.

Really? That's all it is?

Hmph. And here I was, thinking there was some exotic difference. When it's merely the quantity of sweat......

LOL

Long dark winters I can cope with but daylight saving is like a mean trick to early morning training. This is a note to myself to quit stalling and get going.
