harlequinduck - 2011-03-16 10:17 AM Long dark winters I can cope with but daylight saving is like a mean trick to early morning training. This is a note to myself to quit stalling and get going.

I do that too (post to make sure I go). Let us know if you did the session!

Not long and the sun will return in the mornings. I'm looking forward to it!

Glad to see everyone is moving forward... Went for a 30 min swim today then ran for 30 minutes.. picked up the kids then did a 25 mile bike ride thanks to daylight savings time...

Doing a 5k race Saturday then 41 mile bike race Sunday..Weather suppose to be sunny and warm...yeah

Let us know how the races go. I've got a 10km on Sunday, but I re-injured myself on Monday... It's not looking good but I this will be history soon. I am going to see a chiropodist next Friday.

Good job! What is your goal 5km time?

Right now my fastest 5km was 31:30 and my goal is to finish in the 20's.

I would have like to finished in 24 flat with a 8:00 min/mile average but I'm on track so I can't complain especially since last year I wasn't even running due to the knee surgery.. And my garmin had the distance at 3.14miles breakdown as follows:

mile 1 7:59  mile 2 8:15  mile 3 8:16 last.14 mile 6:49

Overall a good run/and good workout..

that's weird, I thought I posted yesterday. Melissa, was wondering how your injury is?

Swam today, I really really like the beginning to swim program here. I definitely feel like it's helping my comfort level immensely. I even add on a few things at the end, just because I'm more comfortable. I still go back and forth about Vegas - I don't think I'll truly know if I'm doing it until that morning. I want to try some open water swims in the lake beforehand, we get there on Wednesday, so I should be able to do it Thursday and Friday morning, maybe Wednesday when we get there? That'll give me a better idea for my capability at this point.

My one girlfriend is a confirmed cancellation - childcare issues. My other girlfriend is still up in the air about it, so may be doing it on my own.

Don't worry about doing it on your own, chances are you're all different paces and wouldn't miss each other anyway.

I did my race on Sunday and my feet were well behaved! However, I tripped on the boardwalk 1/3 into the race and scrapped up my knees and ankle. Haha... Gave me something to laugh about for the duration of the race.

Glad your feet were okay.

I've been doing the beginning swim program and I have to recommend it to anyone who is a beginning swimmer and having difficulty. I really like the progression and variety of the workouts. Today I did

200 warm up
200 swim
200 pull
200 swim
50 cool down

It's the first time I've ever done more than one 200 in a workout. The longest distance I've done until date (continuously) was a 300 and I struggled through every second of it. This was relaxed and comfortable. I couldn't be happier with how things are progressing.

Great! Small progressions and focusing on technique will get you through your first race! Have you been chatting in the beginning swimming program forum?

A bit derailed of training but still there. Break up has finally hit Alaska so with luck I will be training outside with in the week. For now shoveling and home improvement are the main staples of training.

OK, I'm back. Kinda..... Life interfered with BT time.....

Um. When does the mentor program end? Like at the end of the month?

Training: Eh. It's nonexistent still. But I am feeling better, at least. Hope to do a 5K next month.

Goals: Eh. Going to take it slowly, so I don't hack my lungs out. But the weather is getting better, and that's a good thing.

Sorry that you've been sick for so long. At least you're recovering for spring!

This round is over at the end of March, next round starts in April. I am thinking about doing it but I need to weigh my responsibilities... I have a course starting on April 18 and there will hopefully be a job change in my nearish future. If not a change definitely serious looking.

3 weeks until we leave for the tri. Just over 4 weeks until the actual date. I HAVE TO START BIKING! I have such a hard time making myself get on the trainer. And taking it off isn't really an option right now even though the snow is gone. My husband's schedule is all over the place so I can't just head out biking because of the ages of our kids. Plus, reading about how many people have had dogs chase them is freaking me out.

So, I need to get some time in on the bike. Now that I'm feeling a little better about the swim (read:slightly less prone to panic attacks just thinking about the OWS), I need to put in some saddle time. That's my goal for the next 3 weeks. Continue at the pool as frequently as I can, but put in time on the bike as well. I've been defaulting to thinking that since I'm working out at the pool so often, I'm getting the job done. I'm not even thinking about the run. My foot is still killing me - I bought a brace and have been trying to sleep with that at night. As far as for the tri, I'll load up on ibuprofen and do a walk/run, so I'm not really concerned about that aspect of it.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE BIKE NOW.

I have been following those dog threads too! It's scary. I wrote on my to do list "pepper spray" for protection from animals and humans, but use of any kind of aerosol on a person in Canada can equal 3 years in prison regardless of the circumstances...

So, I went for a hike on Monday (after I wrote this to do list) and my husband and I were "greeted" by a very peeved very large dog. The Bruce Trail runs through people's properties at some points and we were on this leash less dogs turf. My husband wants pepper spray now too. We were SO LUCKY that the woman who owns the place wasn't too far behind him, but it took a scary amount of time to get him under control and she had to basically hold him down while we passed through.

It was so scary. I was looking for a climbable tree before it was restrained.

We did a pretty good job retaining team members this season. Including myself we have 9 people who posted in March/April. I think we started out with about 15 or so, but I was told some people would disappear.

Is there anything else I can help with? What changes would you suggest in future mentor groups? I think in the future I will come up with a predetermined weekly theme and give a little information/resources for it.

Thanks so much for giving your time and being a mentor. You, and everyone else on the board, were very helpful to me...and never made my questions seem stupid. I don't have any suggestions for change, really. For me, as a total newbie, what was really useful was having you all here to ask questions about the details. What to wear, what's a good training program, how to handle derailments... I feel much better going into this than I did at beginning of January. Good luck to everyone and hope to see you on the boards. You never know, we may even run into (bad pun) each other in real life at some point. Thank you all so much!!

Cross posted from my other journal:

"Holy anxiety! I just got off BT.com and I'm freaking out about the swim again.

Am I completely insane to think about doing this? 800m. I'm not swimming 800m straight at the pool yet. I'm doing over that amount in yardage at the pool, but certainly not just getting in and doing it. My thought process has been this: I'm wearing a wet suit; my friend is swimming at the same time (although I don't know that I would ask her to swim with me, it doesn't seem fair to her); I can do the amount especially if I include dog paddling and/or back stroke, etc; I plan to get in with my wetsuit on Thursday and Friday, maybe even Wednesday depending on what time we get there, with Brian watching from shore; I can't really do an open water swim here - we still have ice on the water, for crying out loud; I can take breaks at the kayaks, if it's anything like Danskin; I was planning on doing 10 strokes free style, then lift my head and dog paddle if needed, then back in; if I get in and freak out immediately, at least I tried and can try again another day. Am I completely f***ing insane? Should I plan to NOT do it and then do Colorado in August (400m swim)? Just go on vacation - but I hate to not do it because then I worry that I'll just chicken out again and again."
