Vineman

Sunny
Total Time = 5h 24m 48s
Overall Rank = 370/1211
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 63/234
Pre-race routine:

Did the same race last year so I knew what to expect.

Slept in due to late wave time (8:35). Woke up, had 2 cups of coffee and a peanut butter bagel washed down with 20 oz. Gatorade. Got to the venue as the pros were leaving T1, that was kinda cool.
Event warmup:

Porta potty and a short swim before the gun.
Swim
  • 36h 31m
  • 2112 yards
  • 1h 43m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

Per usual my heart rate spikes at the start of the race but I relax ar ound the 200 meter mark. The rest of the swim was uneventful as I maintained a good rhythm.

Last year my swim was 38:50, this year 36:31.
What would you do differently?:

Warm up longer to avoid early heart rate spike.
Transition 1
  • 02m 48s
Comments:

T1 is tough at this race. The transition area is kinda muddy with rocks and the start of the bike is uphill.
What would you do differently?:

Put on socks...more on that later.
Bike
  • 2h 44m 28s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.43 mile/hr
Comments:

There was a slight headwind this year that slowed me down a bit over last. Also, the sun came out at mile 10 and it got hot in a hurry. I started so late that I passed hundreds of people while being passed by only a few.
What would you do differently?:

Wear socks...more on that later.
Transition 2
  • 02m 7s
Comments:

I was more than 2 minutes faster than last year. Most of that can be accounted for by skipping the porta potty. It was a last second decision and turned out to be a good one.
What would you do differently?:

Put on socks...more on that later.
Run
  • 1h 58m 51s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

Coming off the bike, I had a chance to beat last years time. I felt great for the 1st 5 or 6 miles comfortably running at around 8:00 minute pace. Near the turnaround I felt blisters forming on the bottom of my left foot and heel. Of course, I was racing in flats WITH NO SOCKS! By mile 10 I had compounded the problem by pouring water on my head and running through misters. All these things made my shoes wet and the blisters worse. I put off looking at my heel because I knew it would be ugly and perhaps cause me to walk the last three miles, but tempatation tookover and I looked at my heel to see the entire back of my shoe covered in blood. By this time my pace had slowed to around 11 minute miles as I was forced into my duck run. I finally waddled in and couldn't wait to get those damn shoes off.
What would you do differently?:

WEAR SOCKS.
Post race
Warm down:

Feet first-aid, water and free food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of socks

Event comments:

I had a great time doing this race again and may do it in 07 (no long races for me in 06).

Last year...5:14

This year...5:24.

I think had I not blistered, I had a great shot at beating last years time. Not doing so gives me a great excuse to do it again.

Awww, man!!! Sorry about to hear about the sock fiasco. I've wondered the same thing in the past at T1 and T2: Socks or no socks?

There's still alot of folks that would kill to be able to run 13 miles at a 9:34 pace w/out any blisters. As for the swim and the bike - looks like you were definitely firing on all cylinders!

Still, a great race!! Good job.

For the blisters, I highly recommend Spenco 2nd Skin Blister Pads! And I know blisters.

Great race!  Even with the blisters.  I know that some who run w/out socks do the Bodyglide thing in their shoes/on their feet - or even vaseline in their racing shoes... just a thought if you want to keep up the no sock routine.

Great job... I ran the 5430 HIM yesterday and I didn't know if I should race in socks or not. I opted for using socks and now I'm glad that I did... Anyway, great job I've run long races with blistes and it really hurts. Way to tough it out. BTW did wearing no socks affect you on your ride?
