Subject: Buying organic/free-range/grass-fed meat online
I did a quick forum search and came up empty, so I am starting a new thread...

I have struck out trying to find organic/free-range/grass-fed meat locally.  I'm really interested in buying some online or by phone.  Does anyone have a good recommendation for me?  I've been googling the daylights out of it, but so far most of the companies I have found are REALLY expensive.  I'm even willing to buy in bulk (i.e. an eighth of a buffalo) to bring the cost down.  But I'm just really striking out at finding anything reasonable.  I'm particulary interested in chicken and buffalo.  I thought I'd throw it out there and find out if anyone has found the super-secret but reliable place to buy this stuff....

Definitely prefer grass-fed/finished...organic or "near organic" would be nice too.

Help?

Move to CO -- they sell it at all the grocery stores Laughing

Costco carries organic chicken and beef and free range buffalo -- don't know if they ship it tho.  That's the cheapest source I've found.

I realize moving to CO is the ideal solution. However, I cannot.   I wish!   I will see if we have a costco around here...

US Wellness seems to be the online source of choice among the paleo/primal crowd.  I'm assuming you have been on Eat Wild and there is nothing near you?

I looked at Eat Wild tonight.  The closest stuff is at least 1-2 hours away and the only promising one of those I can't figure out if you can buy chicken.  And some of the other close ones are just beef not buffalo.  Definite possibilities, just wondering if someone knew something better.  I will check out US Wellness though!

The best option would be to find someplace local.

Try here for a start

http://www.florida-agriculture.com/consumers/farmers_markets.htm

Not sure how close any of those are to you.  If there are any close you can talk to the farmer there and see about bulk orders.  For farmers getting money up front is always awesome, so they'll probably be happy to help you out.

Here's a list of Florida CSA's

http://www.florida-agriculture.com/consumers/community_supported_agriculture.htm

Quite a few of the CSA's around here do deliver or are open for visitors to come buy products.

It's amazing around here in the DC area how many options we have now.

We have multiple sources for milk, meat, produce, etc deliveries all of local sustainable, some organic, etc farms.  We get probably 75% of our groceries delivered from local farms.

My wife probably has more resources, I'll ask when I get home.

Specialty groceries would be your best bet. We have two around here, Earth Faire and Fresh Market. Pricey, but they have alot of organic, free-range, etc. foods.

I googled "pastured beef and chicken florida" and came up with several farms- not sure if any are close to you (Cognito Farms, and Pastured Waygu were two).  "Pastured" is a typical term for the methods of maintaining a grass fed beef production, and it often includes chicken raising as well.

Ask around- we found our current beef supplier through friends- she raises about 10 head on a small farm, and we purchased a half from her.  Also check out the Amish in Florida (one link: http://www.millersorganicfarm.com/)- we have a large Amish population here, and we found a family that raises chickens and hogs, and we got a half hog from them (yummy bacon!).  All very reasonably priced (but we are in Upstate NY- in Florida YMMV).

Good luck!
