Member  44 |  Subject: What races you plan for this year in SE Asia?What races do you plan to do it 2011? So we can see what races are there. For me it will be: Mekong River International Multisport ITU Asian Cup 2011 (Triathlon) 3/27/2011 in Chiangsaen district, Chiangrai Province , Thailand Aviva Bintan Triathlon (Triathlon) 5/21/2011 in Bintan , Indonesia Vietnam International Triathlon (Triathlon) 9/10/2011 in Hoi An , Vietnam Laguna Phuket Triathlon (Triathlon) 11/27/2011 in Phuket , Thailand Ironman 70.3 Asia Pacific Championship at Laguna Phuket (Triathlon) 12/4/2011 in Phuket , Thailand And maybe one more but not sure if and when will happen, HuaHin Olympic triathlon. Signed up for Bintan (although logistics are a bit gnarly coming from Vietnam Friday PM and having to return Sunday PM) and Vietnam Tri. I'm also doing the SAFRA biathlon in Singapore in Feb. and hopefully the Tinman (an Oly) in Honolulu in July. (The latter to appease my mom--she's really into Ironman coverage now that I do tris, but I have no desire and no time to train for one, and she has no idea you have to qualify for THE Ironman. Thus the Tinman!) Always good when you can work a vacation esp. Hawaii) around an event! |

I'm probably dreaming about the rest, but hey ... to dream is cheap, and to get up every day and train is fun anyway.  |

Also hoping to get some OWS experience--I'm a fairly strong distance swimmer but I struggle with the starts. Maybe will see you there--but imagine I'd have a hard time finding you in the crowd. I won't be wearing the cow head! Look for a skinny white woman with short, dark brown hair in a black tri-suit. Hmmm....probably quite a few of those, too! I'm surprised I haven't heard anything from them--I know I'm entered but most races send you more some race-day info. I guess I'm just supposed to show up at the car park? Staying nearby so hopefully I will find the place. I'm assuming wetsuits aren't needed, even in "winter".... |

I'll be in a custom GSR (black/green/white) racing kit. The water will be warm enough, so you shouldn't need a wetsuit. I called SAFRA the other day regarding the race pack & race info. They just told me that they're handing everything out on race day... yeah, they seem a bit off the ball. Surprising, considering they have a very organized SAFRA HM, which I ran last year. There isn't any mention of start times either. I'm hoping they'll update their website this week. If not, I'm going to call them up to get the skinny. |

I've done races where it stormed the night before and there were 3 ft swells and others where the it's calm like as a lagoon. There was a race I did recently where it was low tide when we started, which cut the swim by about 150m. I know this doesn't help you, but you should be prepared for a variety of situations. btw, it hasn't been too sunny over the last few months here, so it may bring down the water temp a bit. |

Unfortunately it's the day after the Bintan Tri. But I think next year I'll give the latter a miss and try this one. Saturday AM races are a logistical mess for me, and the whole ferry/bike slot thing is becoming a fiasco. (My colleague tried to save money by not booking a package, then discovered you can only get the bike slots with the package....Now we don't know if we can even get the bikes over. Is it all pro swimmers or are there novices? I know I can swim 5K open water and have done it, but it would take a while! |
