Looking at buying a pair of waterproof trail shoes for my 50k. I am a neutral cushion in road running shoes. Any suggestions? What do you wear and do you like 'em? I am new to the trail running scene so any help would be great.

Water-proof shoes aren't!

Well, not if you step in water that goes over the top of the shoes.  And IF water gets in said water-proof shoes, it doesnt like to come out. I would suggest water-proof (seal-skin) socks with whatever shoes you run in, if you expect mud, stream crossings and/or water deep enough to flow into your shoes.

Depending on the type of trail (mainly how rocky/technical it is) you may be able to run in your regular running shoes. REI has a good selection of trail shoes and usually knowledgeable staff that can help you with your selection.  I've run in Salomon Pro 3-Ds and Merrell Fanatic and liked those.

A little dated but: http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-240-400--11601-0,00.html

Good luck with your training and the ultra!

One of the things about trail shoes is that whether or not they are water proof the water drains out of them quicker when compared with normal shoes so that it does not feel like you are running with a wet brick on your foot.

Waterproof shoes, I think, really only help when running in that wet long grass that tends to soak through shoes in 4-5 minutes.

I agree with the comments on waterproof shoes. The good thing about waterproofing is that water can't get in but the downside is that water can't get out either.

I've run in the Under Armour trail shoes and really like them. I had always had problems with blisters on my second toe of my right foot because that toe is long than my big toe and rubbed inside the show. The UA shoes has this foot sleeve thing that keeps the foot from moving around inside the shoe and I have never had the blister problem in the 2 years I've been wearing them. The Brooks Cascadia is also a good shoe.

With trail running just run through the water. If you are wearing the right socks everything dries out pretty quickly. If your 50K has support areas where you can have a bag just bring some extra socks to change in to when you come by the station.

Suacony Kinvara's, light weight shoes with a sticky aggressive tread.  I like the super flexible sole that gives me a good feel for terrain.  I find a stiff sole forces your ankles to roll when you hit roots, rocks or other uneven bumps or obstacles.  They also drain quickly and feel great.

x2.  Salomon's are great on trail and they also have a GTX version if you decide you still want the waterproofing.  They also just released the new XR Crossmax  that looks promising.

I use Inov8 shoes, I have the Roclite 312GTX, but they have weights and shoes for all terrains, I would seriously look at these guys.
I have used the Roclite's for the Jurassic Coast Challenge twice.  takes places over cliffs, hills, beaches and wooded trails.  they work for me......

I used to hate shoes that let water in until I did a few runs with some deep stream and river crossings... then I hated the shoes I thought were waterproof for the reason already stated. After experiencing that a few times, the only time I wear waterproof shoes is when I'm snowshoeing or doing a trail run in the snow with some gators on to keep the snow out of the top.

I won a pair of XR Crossmax. Haven't had a chance to try them on the trails yet, they have been ok on the road. Might use them for a 15K trail race this weekend.
