Pre-race routine:

Had everything packed the night before, so just had to dress and make breakfast (toast and honey) to eat later.

As I'd anticipated the swim was canceled due to high ecoli levels and it was converted to a duathlon, with a 1km beach run to replace the swim.
Event warmup:

A few leg swings, but nothing major.
Run
  • 08m 14s
  • 1 kms
  • 08m 14s  min/km
Comments:

Ugh. Sand running. The beach was pretty chopped up by the time we got to it. I tried to run as close to the inside as possible where the divets weren't quite as big. All in all hard and slow. I had a couple of sections where I thought I was in a good rhythm but it didn't last long.
What would you do differently?:

I probably needed to lift my knees higher.
Transition 1
  • 00m 39s
Comments:

Transition went smoothly, just had to grab the bike. Hands down transition was the best part of my race ;)
Bike
  • 32m 14s
  • 16 kms
  • 29.78 km/hr
Comments:

I had a lot of time to make up on the bike and I tried. I don't think I could have ridden any harder. I was hoping for an average of 30km/hr and 29km/hr isn't bad.
Transition 2
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

Running into transition totally fine, racking bike all good. Putting shoes on I seemed to fumble a bit. One of the shoe tongues got caught.
Run
  • 25m 44s
  • 4 kms
  • 06m 26s  min/km
Comments:

Meh. Lets face it I probably went too hard on the bike. This is a pretty slow run for me. I was passed by a whole lot of people. I think I passed two, one was walking!
What would you do differently?:

I haven't run consistently for two weeks. I can't get away with it at current fitness levels.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of dedicated training. I was there to have fun and maintain a good attitude. I really enjoyed myself, even if I am a little disappointed at my performance at current fitness levels.

Event comments:

If you're looking to try a triathlon in a friendly environment this is it. It's not a massive race but there's plenty of support from fellow competitors and the event staff.

Nice race! Beach running - ouch. Great bike speed! Good on you for getting out there and giving this a go even with less than perfect preparation. You've got such a good attitude, its inspirational :-)

Great going Casie - first race in how long?
Beach run....?  I'm with Magda - ouch!  Not much fun there by the sounds of it.
You smoked the bike, and would have done the same on the run if you hadn;t missed your run training!
You'll have to go and enter more races now, won't you....?

Way to go!

I still maintain you as rockstar status for running less than 7min/km after that sand run and bike leg.

Good effort with the conditions we've had here lately.
