Comments: Used this race as a fitness test for Oceanside. Was very happy with the end result. Went in a bit haphazard with regard to race goals. Was a crazy week which cumulated with news of the death of fellow cycling club rider who was killed less than two days prior after being struck by a street sweeper. That, along with miscellaneous other events, left me in a position to almost not even do this race. The race starts fast (downhill) with probably the majority of the hard climbing done on the front half of the course. The variation in elevation makes more traditional pacing strategy difficult, so I just went on what felt right at first. Kept thinking I was going out too fast and perhaps would pay for it at the end. The explosion, though, never occured. Later, in the last quarters of the race, I relied a few times on the pacing of other runners to pull me through stretches that I otherwise may not have ran as hard. A pleasant suprise was bumping into Steven Tally, who I had just ran the Avalon 50 with during the last half mile climb towards the finish. Both he and I were working hard trying to break 1:30, but just as I thought we had it in the bag, I realized the finish was actually just a bit farther in (maybe 600 ft.) from where the start began... bummer. Nevertheless, my PR on a flat course was 1:33 last November, so I was very happy with my overall performance on this hilly course, less a real taper or meaningful race prep. I thought about our fellow fallen rider throughout the race, broke down a bit at the finish, and dedicated this run to his memory. What would you do differently?: Not much... ran this to the best of my ability. Post race
