i thought i start this thread to hopefully get to know some fellow triathletes who are doing the mooseman as well. maybe some of us can meet up at the race. anyway, this will be the third time i'm doing this race, but my training has been somewhat inconsistent due to a nasty cold and vacation. i'm wondering how everybody else is doing?

I'll be doing this race too in preparation for IM Wisconsin. I haven't done it before but am really looking forward to it. I've been training on my official plan for a couple weeks now.

I'm planning on entering this race. I was training for a Mary 2/27 but got peroneal tendinitis on one of my taper runs. I can't run for 1-2 more weeks so I will be doing lots of biking and swimming. This will be a perfect time to train for 1/2 IM(minus the runs). I am going to follow a 12 week plan starting march 13 and hopefully I will be 100% able to run.

Idurland, good luck with your racing and training for a full IM! I did a full IM myself in 2008 and know what dedication and training volume it entails. But just finishing it is an amazing accomplishment.

MRDAVIDALEXANDER, good luck to you too! Sorry about the injury. Your training plan seems tricky, but it sounds like you know what you are doing.

WILHELM -

Did you do it last year, with the new and more challenging bike course? I'm a veteran of sorts on that course (3X Granite Ledges, 1X Moosey oly, 1X Moosey 1/2, 1X Moosey aqbk [until I broke a spoke at ~mile 34])........but didn't do it last year. I'm hoping you did and can provide some comparisons!

MRDAVID -

I twanged my peroneal on Jan 25, and stayed off the run until Feb 11. This was a first date with me and either of the peroneals, so I didn't know quite what to expect. I saw my sports doc 13 days post-twang, and he thought it was about ready for running okay. I wited a few days, and ran 4.7km on the 11th, 6.2km on the 14th, 6.7km on the 18th, and 7.3km yesterday (21st). I'm pretty pleased with that progression, and will aim for 7.5-8km tomorrow.

I felt it almost constantly for 2-3 weeks, and over time it has become the dullest of distant aches at worst; yesterday's run saw it at about 97% fine.

Unlike Achilles and plantar fasciitis, peroneal problems are not potential deal-breakers. That said, if you can stretch out your time away from running a little longer than scheduled/planned, that would probably be best. I'm sorry you've missed the 2-27 marathon..........but you should be able to be in great shape for Mooseman!

(And in the category of Misery Loves Company, I've lost two marathons to injuries in the final two weeks out from them. It sure sucks, but better it happen then than at mile 12 or so of the marathon itself!)

Steve-

Thanks.  I never thought it would linger this long.  I am greatful that I can walk without any pain now.  I am thinking of working with a training plan from Mark Allen online.  I have been in touch with them and they have been great about getting back to me.  They want me to start my plan this Monday. They said that I should use the elliptical or water running until I am okay to run.  So looks like I will be officially training for Mooseman this Monday!  It will help me forget that I missed my marathon due to injury!

Sorry, Steve, I didn't do the Mooseman last year (did Timberman instead and Providence the year before that), so I can't provide any info on the new bike course. You could  check the race reports from last year, but that might be tedious. Hopefully, some of the other BT's will chime in...

Hey Everyone, I raced Mooseman last year and the new bike course is pretty challenging. There is a monster climb that you hit twice. Patience REALLY pays off on this course. The decents are really fun, but a bit sketchy. There is a "speed limit" zone that defintely cuts into your speed reward for the tough climbs. I actually love the ride, but no PR will be happening for me on this course.

Just for a reference... Here are my splits from my two 70.3 distance races in 2010

Mooseman
Bike Split - 2:55
Run split 1:38

Pumkinman
Bike Split 2:35
Run Split 1:38

Granted M.Man was early in the year, but I raced Placid and pretty much coasted into Pumkin Man after that. I have heard that Mooseman might be going to one loop (originally that was the plan but the roads were too beat) and that will increase speeds dramatically.

Hope this helps.

Wilhelm, Thanks for the encouraging words. I'm six weeks into my training for the season and it's going well. Not getting too hung up missing a training session here or there (sick child, bad weather, etc)... Really looking forward to a long weekend up north.

I'm kind of glad to hear about the challenging and hilly bike course, because that seems to be the same assessment of the IM Wisconsin course. Since this is the only 70.3 I'm doing this year I want it to help prepare me for the longer race.

Good luck to everyone else training.

Does anyone have an elevation profile for the bike course, either the old or the new one?

Thanks.

I did the 70.3 last year and I would highly recommend going with a compact crank for the hill you do 2X or at least a 27 or 28 on your rear cassette. Me pushing a 39x25 was NOT enough and I consider myself strong in the hills. Just think about the spikes in efforts you will be pushing on that hill that will later hurt you on the run.

My 2 cents in case I did the race again....

This is will be my second HIM and preparing for IMAZ.  I grew up about 2 hours north of here so it will be pretty fun to race and have my family friends around!  I am planning on doing a HIM in 2 weeks in Las Veags, but that may change!

I am looking to seeing that course, it is just beautiful country!

Hey Guys,

Mooseman will be my prep for Lake Placid this year. I've done Timberman a couple of times, but this will be my first Mooseman. It's going to be strange to do a half im this early in the season. My wife and I love the area, it should be fun.

Where is the best place to stay? The race website only lists a campsite for accommodations. My wife and I are too old for camping that early in the season!

look on hotels.com - search newfound lake, nh, and you'll find a bunch within 10 miles, but nothing very close to the race site.  i'm staying at the Days Inn Campton - was like $80/night + tax.

I'm surprised they haven't closed it yet.  Will this be the most they every had?

Anyone planning on doing hill repeats on the bike to train? I was wondering if this bike course benefits the larger athlete versus the smaller athlete.  Or does it even out?  The ascent and decent are almost the same so its an advantage to the smaller going up and disadvantange to the smaller going down (vice versa).

Just booked a room in Plymouth at the Red Roof Inn, around 14 miles from the race site.

Maybe the ice will have melted off of Newfound Lake by June 5th!

Hi all-

I am doing the Mooseman as a prep for IM WI as well.  I think it could be a fun day, as long as the weather is reasonable... basically not to cold.  How are you all thinking about the swim?  I am expecting this to be really cold, which will be "fun".  As for the bike, is an aero helmet worth it?  Thanks, and good luck to everyone!

I definitely think this course benefits the lighter athletes. But I guess it would be better to say that it is a climbers course. (Which usually is the lighter guys/gals)

Hi Moosers!  Even though I'm not signed up for this year, I've done the half iron race the past three years so I wanted to add a couple of tips.  As far as lodging goes, if you're going up with a group we found it cheaper and more fun to rent a house for 2/3 nights.  Coming from NYC we would drive up Friday night then stay til Monday.

The swim will be cold, BUT, I wore a sleeveless wetsuit and I was fine.  I made sure to get a little practice swim in before my wave went off to get my heart rate acclimated to the cold temps.  Last year, the water felt warmer than the air!  I did see people with neoprene caps, but besides my fingers and toes being cold I was ok.  Plus, there are wetsuit strippers so you won't have to fumble with your wetsuit.

If the bike course stays the same as 2010, you must practice your hills.  Maybe even getting a compact crank would be helpful.  I suffered climbing the one major hill (twice) and my bike time paid for it.  Hope these tips help!

I'm racing the mooseman as my first effort at a HIM.  I'm pretty nervous about this bike climb....any hill routes in the general NYC area that mimic the climb in the race or at least are a reasonable practice course?

Thx!
