Pre-race routine:

My ride got here around 6:15 and we started the 2:30 drive up to the race in Danville. The ride alone was enough to give a taste of things to come as we drove through snow, fog, and rain as we moved further north.
Event warmup:

got checked in and then headed out for a short warmup. While the race is only 7 miles the course in insane, with some crazy hills, cliffs, water, mud, ice, snow, creek crossings, and some places where you basically have to pick your way through briars and make your own trail, so i didn't want to go overboard knowing i'd be out there for an hour or so.

Comments:

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this one. The first three miles were all uphill, and it was steep. A group of 5 or so of us started a bit faster to get out and onto clear trails ahead of the main group, and then the suffering started. I was dying and my chest was ready to explode by mile 2, and we still had more up to go! after that things wound up and down for a bit, and we popped out and were running through a clearing for power lines, when i guy in front of me was no longer there. I stopped dead in my tracks and looked over the edge... We had to slide on our backs down a 50 foot near cliff!! After that back onto the trails where we sorted out our eventual finish order. After mile 3.5 or so i never saw 1 and 2 again. i went back and forth with another guy over those last few miles, passing him on every downhill and flat, and he'd cruise by on the hills. with a mile to go his shoe ripped apart and he was running in just one shoe, with 2/3 of a mile of trails left. And he didn't slow one bit. Once we got back out on the roads he dusted me like it was his job and never looked back.

I came away with bloody legs, mud everywhere (including under my hat in my hair!). It was a great race and i'll be back next year.
What would you do differently?:

Better shoes, flats were not the smarted choice

I had a HS friend who did this saturday (I grew up 5 miles from Danville)...he said he had never been so sore the day after...and he was a starting fullback for University of Delaware!!   LOL!!

Great race...hope you were able to stop at Olde Forge Brewing Co downtown after the race!

They had a keg of their summer ale as one of the post races beers. it was amazing. however, by the time i got in the car for the ride home, i didn't need anymore. the guy that drove us down was entertained most of the ride home by my giggling at road signs!

I was actually not too sore the next day and managed to PR and place 1st OA in a local 10k!
Today however is a totally different story!
