My Grandmother-In-Law, who is very sweet, used to let me know I was getting heavy (which was true at 5' 10" and 210 lbs).  Now I have lost 40 lbs and am entering my 2nd triathlon season.  When she sees me now she tells me I looked better when I had a little more weight on Laughing.  I just smile, and think to myself, I could actually lose 5-10 more pounds.

Hahahaha!

That's the best.

This is a great thread. It's amazing how heavy and out of shape people over 40 usually are, and how that's supposed to be good for your body.

In reality, it's way too easy to put on 120 pounds and not even realize it. "Boom, boom, boom," is the joke my wife and I (both 50 yo) share when we see people our age and older walking around town.

And it's not like it's that hard! I was looking at my logs, and I'm training less than an hour a day right now. That's enough to be competitive in my ag, so it might only take 20 minutes a day to just be fit and look good.

20 minutes a day? It's almost like people have to go out of their way to make couch-sitting and eating into endurance events.

My question: how do most people summon the superhuman ability to sit on the couch as much as they do?

It's easier to do this! Really!

Yep, don't take comments on the forums too personally, especially if you asked for opinions and rizer, you were very gracious in your response, it wasn't needed, everybody is fine!

As for me, I also don't take any comments personally that I perceive as negative from other people. I could be mis-perceiving them (they really are concerned, they're not putting me down), the person's just a jerk and being him/herself (nothing to do with me), and even if it is intended/negative/personal, I just chuckle and think, "Poor poor dear."

Family you can't pick, but friends you sure can. If I had friends that (UNBIDDEN) constantly criticized me, as I said, I would get better friends.

As far as family goes, sometimes you gotta put up with the comment or two, but I no longer put up with tirades. I say, "Excuse me" and walk away.

If you're tired of hearing something ... quit listening.

...

Sure, it's "healthy" to an extent, but so is spending only 3-4 hours a week only on running.  I contend that the amount of time and mental effort required to be a decent triathlete is excessive...

Don't think so; but maybe it depends on what you mean by "decent." I'm in the top 10% of ag'ers right now at the sprints I'm doing. Training is much better for me mentally than not, and takes a lot less time than I gain in productivity. Particularly when I swim, I get a mental boost that allows me to get twice as much stuff done in the rest of my life. But this is also a calculation I watch: I stick with training goals that help rather than impede family and work.

I think in the context of "most people," moderate exercise, like most ag'ers do, would give a net boost to their ability to handle life.

One other advantage to tri training is that it encourages better time management over the ave person's lifestyle of procrastination.

Not that I've ever delayed a workout to post on BT Embarassed
