What is the going rate these days?

My 11 1/2 yr old son is going to "apprentice" babysit for my brother this weekend. My SIL will be home but my son will be responsible for 1 or 2 of the three depending on the activity.
I think he should do it for free to get the experience but my SIL insists ion paying him. I think it will be from about 10am until maybe 5pm.

What is fair these days?

Thanks in advance.

We have three kids (11, 5 and 3) and pay our teenage babysitters $8/hour - rounding up for partial hours.

Since your SIL will be there and he will be more of a mother's helper, I would suggest $5/hour. An 11 year old would probably be absolutely thrilled with that.

I have two kids (5 and 2 1/2) and I pay the local teenager $5.00/hour. She gets paid the same whether I'm home or gone. I pay my adult babysitter more.

Wow. We need to move. We have to pay our babysitter(s) $12 an hour. We live in CT and there are not enough kids around that want to do it. So, you pay up or you don't get a babysitter.

It's a racket really. I think the mob is involved.

We pay $5.00 an hour for two kids (4 1/2 and 2 1/2), both boys. They are angels, really

Our sitters are high school girls and boys.

Does it depend on the age of the sitter AND number of kids?

For instance, a 13-14 yo might get paid less, but if you happen to find a junior or senior in HS that is still babysitting, would you pay them more?

When I babysat (ended that 10 years ago), I started at age 12-13 with $4 an hour, but ended up making 8-10 an hour (at age 18) depending on number of kids, etc.

Here in the middle-of-nowhere Ohio it's really cheap.  For my 3 kids I pay college students $6/hr.  If I have a teenager do it, I pay 5/hr.  And that's considered big money in our area.  I know lots of people who pay $3-4 / hr.

We're not that bad, but close. My kids don't need a sitter anymore now that my older daughter is 13, but when I did have a sitter, I was paying about $8 an hour for two kids. I remember I used to get $1 per hour per kid...but that was a good 15 years ago now.

Thanks for all the responses.

I think I'll tell them 1/2 price is good @ $2.50 since there will be other adults around with the idea that once he has experience and the training course it will go up to the full $5.00.

BTW wat is your feeling on the babysitting courses? Do you require them from your sitters?
