Overall Rank = 141/245

Age Group Rank = 12/18
Pre-race routine:

Hot and humid at night and had difficulty sleeping. I think I got a total of two hours. Got up @ 5:30. Had Cheerios with blueberries and some coffee.

The race was only @ 15-20 minutes away, so I mosied on out around 7 a.m. for the 8:30 race
Event warmup:

Waited on line for race packet -- Max and Amanda were volunteering so I got to check in with them. Jorge another BTer, was one of the race's organizers.
The transition area was up a long hill from the pond, so my warm up consisted of jogging up and down the driveway between the pond and the bikes, as I neglected to pick up a second bag with my race bib.

I also swam a bit prior to the start of the race. I think the race got off to a late start -- closer to 9 a.m. and it was starting to get hot.

Max, Amanda and Nikki (another BTer) were also swim buddies.

Comments:

Well, I knew my swim would be weak. I haven't really swam much this spring and summer, due to shoulder injury. My goal for this race was to have fun and not be concerned about the time (I didn't even wear my watch). The "word on the street" was that the swim was long. Jorge says it was .51 miles -- so not that much longer.

This was a small race, with a lot of beginners. The 4th wave was for beginners (I was in the 3rd). This was the first race I've participated in that didn't have a crowded-feeling swim. I was able to take advantage of several drafting opportunities.
What would you do differently?:

My stroke is all messed up. I need help. Goal for this fall and winter is to stregthen swim.
Transition 1
  • 05m 1s
Comments:

I was very light-headed when I got out of the water and needed to walk abit. About half-way up the hill I started to jog. I used Pam for the first time and found it to be a very effective lube for wetsuit removal.
What would you do differently?:

not be light-headed?
Bike

Comments:

I passed a lot of people who passed me in the water. Bike felt good and strong. I rode all-out and had a great time.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 2
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

We had to dismount after coming down a hill and I wasn't prepared. I hopped off the bike and needed to walk abit to get my legs back.
What would you do differently?:

Stretch prior to dismount
Run
  • 26m 58s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 42s  min/mile
Comments:

I'm pleased with my sub-9 minute mile pace, given the heat.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around a bit, drank a lot, and stretched.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

the heat was a huge factor. Also, my lack of swimming this season

Event comments:

As I said, this was organized by Jorge and fellow members of the Boston Young Professionals Organization and was their first race. They did a great job but had some "first timer" mistakes. Practice makes perfect. Overall, it was a fun, low-key race that was friendly to beginners and novices.

Glad you had a chance to get out and tri this season, Joanne! Nice job getting through the swim, and awesome bike and run splits! There's all winter to get that stroke straightened out and that shoulder strong...

For 2006, you still owe yourself a full season of tri's (including a NH 1/2 Iron!) plus a nice fall marathon!

It still does seem like you had a lot of fun doing the 3-way!

Joanne - Thank you very much for doing the 3 way!  The weather was very hot indeed, I got in a huge workout by running from side to side, trying to help all the volunteers. (BTW, they are the ones which really deserve the credit for a nice race

I promise I will be working very hard to offer better race(s) next year.

Jorge --

I didn't mean to sound critical -- I had a great time!  I can't imagine all the tiny details that must be involved in putting on a race.

I'll be back next year

Thanks!

I'm looking at a 1/2 marathon this fall (Bay State in Lowell)

I also plan to get real pedals this fall, since I haven't gotten around to doing that yet
