Overall Rank = 525/597

Age Group Rank = 34/46
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:45am, stretched and little in the shower to loosen up. Ate half a whole wheat english muffin w/ peanut butter and water. Left for the race at 5:30am - ate a powerbar and drank water on the way. For a first timer, the arrival at the race was pretty cool - great music and lots of people getting set up.
Event warmup:

Racked bike and set up transition. Waited in line for 20 min. to use the bathroom then stretched, jogged for just a minute or two and took a quick swim to check the water. (wow the water was hot!)
Swim
  • 23h 15m
  • 880 yards
  • 2h 38m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

Hot water - no wetsuits. Pretty nervous at the start. Being my first race, it was really cool to watch the swim waves go off. I was in the last wave (first timers) so I got to watch everyone go off. Swam about as I had expected. Breaststroked about 1/3 of the distance to catch breath/sight/cough up Lum's Pond water). I was still getting in 10-20 strokes on the last stretch between rests and I never had panic/hyperventalating problems so I was pleased over all. Beat my goal of 30 min. for my first OW 1/2 mile swim.
What would you do differently?:

Try to swim more freestyle, but it's easy to say that sitting hear at the computer. I gave it my best and I'm not disappointed.
Transition 1
  • 03m
Comments:

No wetsuit made this a piece of cake. Happy with T1.
What would you do differently?:

Bring a small cooler with ice to keep bottles and running hat cold.
Bike
  • 1h 03m 42s
  • 19.5 miles
  • 18.37 mile/hr
Comments:

Great bike. Felt like I didn't push it too hard and had a good time.
What would you do differently?:

Possibly drank more gatorade/water. Not sure if that would have helped on the run.
Transition 2
  • 02m 3s
Comments:

Not much to do here since I don't have clipless peddles. Took my time getting a drink. Went down the wrong rack of bikes, but that didn't slow me down much.
Run
  • 34h 15m
  • 3.1 miles
  • 11h 02m 54s  min/mile
Comments:

First mile was ok. I was taking it easy and going slow because I knew I was getting hot. Had to walk through the water station - not winded or out of energy, just overheated. Mentally tough to accept that I had to walk after all my training, but I had to...I was starting to get chills and goosebumps so I'm sure some sort of heat exhaustion was not far away. Had a hard time cooling down after the race.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure how much to attribute to the heat and how much to training. I think I wouldn't have had a problem running the entire distance if it weren't for the heat - I had done several bricks this length with no problems.
Post race
Warm down:

Hose on head and neck. Gatorade, water, banana.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat - heat index 95-100 when we were finishing.

Event comments:

3 stalls for the men and no porta pots. Waited in line 20-25 min. to use the bathroom which I would have liked to use to warm up, stretch, and mentally prepare.

Great race!  You did a hell of job, considering the heat/humidity.  I too, was forced to walk a little.

Excellent job on your first race, triathlete!  I've never thought about the cooler thing... sounds like a great idea.  I may steal that one from you.  The heat was a killer, but way to work through it.  So, when's your next race?

Thanks for the support Bryan and AlBearAngel!  It was tough, but I've really enjoyed the training and the race was one of the coolest things I've every participated in.  My next race is the Osprey sprint down in Snow Hill, MD on October 1st.  Here are my goals for that race

Swim: .5 mile 20 min.

Bike: 15.3 mile 50 min. (I currently ride a mountain bike)

Run: 5k < 30 min.

T1 and T2 combined: < 4 min.
