Subject: IM Training - Extra Week

I am training for Ironman Texas and have been using the beginner IM training plan from bt.  I must have miscounted my 20 weeks from the race because I have one extra week between now and the race than the schedule calls for.  My question is, what should I do with that extra week? Here are the options I can think of:

1) Add extra recovery week in the middle of final 4 week build period

2) Go back and complete theme week from area of weakness

3) Add extra week of taper

4) Other?

I am hesitant to do #2 because my knees are hanging on by a thread and I might not want to push it harder than necessary.  Is it critical that I get 4 continuous weeks of building in, or can I split them up?

Thanks for the advice!

I'd probably repeat the last week before the taper begins.  But if you're really having knee troubles, then #3 might be a better option to make sure you're 100% for the event.

I wouldn't add to the taper. First IM I did I had 3 week taper and felt I lost fitness...never again.

Extra rest or repeat a week are good options depending on how you feel.

I'd listen to my body and adapt the plan based on that. I'd most likely stretch the plan out and repeat workouts to do that and/ or take an extra rest days to fill that extra week.

You have 21 days of training to do in 28 days. If you took extra rest day or two as needed that fills 23 days. Take 5 days and repeat them or do a version of them....then you have stretched 21 into 28.

What makes your knees hurt?

If it's running, then you might want to take a week off running, but really hammer the bike and swim.

It is a pre-existing knee injury due to running.  Because of this, I have been slow to build my running in training and am still not completing 100% of the long runs.  I would like to get to 100%, but that will be a judgement call based on how they feel the next few weeks.  Actually, it is more of a nagging injury (combination of runners knee and a bakers cyst) and I should be able to push through it even if it gets worse.  Unfortunately, it hurts during all 3 activities, so I wont get off easy if I drop one activity from training for a week.

I have heard mixed reviews on long tapers. I guess it is just a personal preference and I have not noticed much of a difference in previous training periods.  I already have a 3 week taper, with a recovery week prior to that.  That is basically 4 weeks of tapering and I don't know if I should extend that.

I like that idea.  It is kind of the compromise between the two.  Great for someone who is having a hard time deciding.

2 or 3 taper sometimes depends on what you call tapering.  I generally start my taper 3 weeks out, but it is still a 15 hour week.  My next week is generally about 10 hours, and the final week not including the race is only about 5 hours.

Also, you need to remember that showing up at the line healthy is way better than with a nagging injury but with a little bit more fitness.

It sounds like you are doing a really good job and thinking everything through.

I'd just repeat the week I'm on now.
