Today had to be one of the worst days in my life. My brother and I had our first tri ever this morning. Woke up early, hydration and energy was good. Me, my brother, my girlfriend, and brother in law showed up at the race. Got body marked, listened to the pre race briefing and lined up for the swim start. The swim went extremely well. I passed well over a half dozen other racers in the snake swim and although I was a little out of breath, I would call it a huge success. T1 was extremely speedy and I was off on the bike course. I was flying along (for me) averaging about 20mph. About half way through the first loop I finally got in control of my breathing. Nothing could go wrong now... I complete the first loop (or so I thought at the time) and started working on the second. Pace was still excellent. Things were really looking up. As I was coming to the end of the second lap I realized that I had missed a turn on the end of the first lap. Im not sure if I was staring at my computer or what, but I competely missed the sign. Quickly realizing what had happened I slowed down, rode to the transition area, picked up my stuff and put it in my car, then went to cheer on my brother as he crossed the finish line. I can't believe I made such a bonehead move. I guess ill have do a little better in October... Hope everyone else faired better than I!

You chose a difficult day/race for your first tri (this being my third Bonzai super sprint). The bike course is very segmented and I completely understand how you overlooked the turn. Keep the positive thoughts with you going into Oct.-view this triathlon not as a DNF, but merely a speed workout that gave you some "real world" experience.

The run was brutal-everyone complained of the gasping for air sensation amidst the thick humidity.

I have to agree with trilover. This is a great real world experience and it sounds like that which you did was hugely successful. Seems to me that you will go into the next one with knowledge and confidence that you might not have had this time!!!

Also, way to be honest. You could have sneaked thru and I'm impressed with your integrity.

Sounds like something I would do.  I missed a turn on the run course at my race in April, and ran a half mile before I figured it out.  Sadly, there was a woman behind me who was following me.  When I ran back to where I was supposed to turn, it was CLEARLY marked.  How I missed it, I have no idea.

I have been fortunate that my bike courses have been straight out-and-back deals, so no confision there.  For me, I tend to get a bit "in my head" on the bike and focus a bit too much on things like my rpms, speeds, what gear am I in, when do I need a gel, etc.  I'd be in real trouble if I also had to think about the course at the same time.  Oh, wait, I was, two races ago, where I missed preparing for a speed bump and DNFed -- had to get 8 stitches in my right arm.

Don't beat yourself up over it.  There are only 2 things you can do about your mistakes:
- learn from them
- leave them behind

Go train!

Just curious, couldn't you just turn around and finish the bike portion? Or the race people didn't let you finish?

I was on my second lap before I realized I dropped the ball. I'm pretty sure the judges in the area called me in when I missed it the first time. I just didnt want to finish busting my ass then get the DQ.

Sorry to hear about the DNF. I'm glad I'm not the only one who had problems beathing on the run. I thought I had instantaneous asthma! The heat and humidity slowed me down during the run, but I made it through. This was my first tri as well. Next up for me is a end-of-season race in MD, 10/1. Don't give up on triathlons, you've come too far and you've gotten too close to stop now!

I'll knock it out next time. No worries. Good news is that there wasn't a physical issue, im just directionally challenged.

Always try to learn something from an experience and it sounds like you did.  This is a common occurence for many people.  Hang in there with the good attitude!
