Subject: Tip for swimmers with sinus problems

I dread going to the pool because when I leave my sinuses just kill me for about 2-3 days.  And when I say my sinuses get bad for several days I mean my nose completely shuts down where I can't breath at all.  I've been using a nose plug but the one I have I have a hard time keeping it on my nose and some water gets in.  A friend told me about Neti pot and I started using it once I got home with some success but not very much.  This morning I went swimming with a new plan of action.  I took some vasiline and swabbed the inside of each nostril hoping this would help with my nose membranes absorbing the chlorine.  Also, I brought my Neti Pot to the pool with me.  As soon as I got out of the pool I ran to pots through my sinuses.  Then I took a shower and after my shower I ran two more pots through my sinuses before I headed home.  That was at 7am this morning and so far I have not been having any problems with my sinuses.  Hopefully this tip will help somebody else out there with similar problems.  Also, if anybody else has some different tips regarding this problem please share.

Rinse with saline solutions after swimming.  Cuts down on the sinus problem.

I use a nose plug and I also have a netipot in which I use to clean my sinuses with a saline solution. I bought mine at Wal-Mart.  It really does help!

I recommend NeilMed Sinus Rinse.  I think they are the same company that makes the Neti pot.  Easier to carry, easier to use.  Especially for use outside of home.

Netipots have been worthless for me.  I basically OD on allergy meds and when they wear off I am miserable for about 24 hours.  Hence why I havent been swimming much and hope the ocean opens for swimmign soon.  I think the temps hit 42 in the LIS today.

I can barely even imagine swimming without exhaling through my nose.  If you do all your breathing through your mouth you are giving up a lot of efficiency.

If water in your nose is a problem, don't let any in there.  No diving or jumping in the deep end, and exhale through your nose, only inhale through your mouth.

There is also something to be said for building up a tolerance.

I used to have major sinus issues after swimming. Tried a lot of things but now seem to have beaten it. I use a basic saline spray occasionally (don't use Dristan or similar products) plus as soon as I get out of the pool I rinse my nose with fresh water in the shower. It's not as gross as it sounds. I just stand under the shower, cup my hands around my nose and breath in fresh water one nostril at a time. You have to inhale the water till it's in the back of your throat then exhale. It simply flushes out the pool water. Feels a little uncomfortable the first few times as I think we are conditioned to not let water get that far up.
