Changing Tire with new aero wheels & valve extenders

I'll just assume that you have the Zipp type extenders(which I hate).

Before putting on the extender make sure that the valve is completely open.  Twist the valve open, then give it a final twist which will lock it into the open position.  Also, make sure you seal the threading where the extender and valve meet to ensure a good seal.  Use plumber's tape. 

For changing a flat, pre thread an extender to your spare.  You'll save yourself a lot of headache that way. 

If you're like me you'll ditch the Zipp type extender and move to extenders with a removable core.  For me they are the easiest to use and least hassle.

I've been using the Zipp extenders for a couple of years now and have about reached the end of my patience with them.  What brand of extender do you use with a removable core and where did you get it?

I use Vittoria or Challenge latex tubes (2 brands of latex with removeable core) and Tufo extenders.  I purchased mine at Wheelbuilder but Real Cyclist has them as well.  No teflon tape to deal with and no need to carefully close the valve with plunger.

Unless I missed that the OP was using tubular tires, the Vittorias wont work. I found that out the hard way by ordering them and thinking they would work with tubes with removable cores.

I ended up using the Tufo valve extenders. They have a rubber seal so you dont have to worry about messing with the plumbers tape (which ends up being a double PITA when you have to change a tube out on the road/course)

I picked up the Tufo Valve wrench as well.

The Vittoria's come in a tubular version and clincher version.  But you are right...they are not cross compatible.

This sounds like a stupid questions, but I haven't had a lot of coffee yet this morning:

40mm Tufo extender + Vittoria Latex tube with 51mm valve = 91mm total valve

Is it just me or will that not work with a Hed Jet 9?

Vittoria also sells a 42mm extender with a removable core for clinchers

I avoid valve extenders like the plague.  If you don't have to use them, don't.  Life is too short to deal with valve extenders.

My Zipp 404s are 58mm so I use tubes with 80mm valves; you can buy these in most but not all LBSs. 

Having to deal with valve extenders is a major stumbling block for me to want to go with deeper rims like 808s.  I have a low hassle tolerance and valve extenders are major hassle.

I went with the 60mm Tufo extender with the Vittoria 51mm latex tubes. Works great with my Jet 9's.
