I went to high school in Cambridge! I was a Preston Panther...

But I don't live there anymore, so that isn't really helpful information I guess.

Hi mistress k

We do live fairly close. Any big race plans for 2012?

already registered for around the bay, and trying to figure out if doing the welland half 1 month before muskoka long course is a bad idea...or at least, trying to figure out if it's a sufficiently bad idea to actually deter me from doing so

how 'bout you?

cheers!

I too am planning on Around the Bay. I have been aiming to return to that race for a long time, but every year something comes up. I will probably register this week. I too am planning on the Muskoka Long Course. I only started Tri this past summer. I have a few races in mind for next season. I really wish our summers were a bit longer here so that the season would last longer. I'm aiming for a half in Sept., just not sure which one. I didn't consider the Welland Half, just not sure I'd be ready that early in the season for it.

welland is an awesome race - protected swim in the canal, all of 1 hill on the bike course, and the looping run gives you lots of interaction with other racers. as long as you do some work over the winter (clearly you'll be running if you're doing ATB, so keep going to the pool and hitting the trainer as well) and get some decently long rides in once the weather clears you'll be fine.

had i not injured my sacroiliac joint doing the cambridge crit 2 weeks before welland last year, i would've had no reservations at all about my fitness. as it stood, even being unable to turn a pedal on my bike without feeling like i was being stabbed, it was a fun day

re: muskoka long course. become friends with repeats (both bike and run) up shantz hill. thank me later.

cheers!

Hey mistress K

Thanks for the encouragement & tips. I'll have to keep Welland in mind. I registered for the Bay today. I'm very excited about returning to that race after 11 years. My plan is to consistently work on all 3 sports over the winter. I just signed up for a swim clinic. Definitely need to work on my technique in that department. I've already (begrudgingly) been on the trainer. Other than swimming, I hate indoor workouts.

oh, noone enjoys being on the trainer - the workouts from www.thesufferfest.com do make them go by a little quicker, though. i won't say easier, because they're not mis-named, but more tolerable than just grinding away..

(just before heading out for a quick 5k brick run last night)

cheers!

Just thought i'd give any women in the Waterloo area looking for a wetsuit that WINNERS at Conestoga mall had a few TYR Hurricane suits for sale.  They looked like small sizes but that was only one rack where I saw about 6 or so.  I think they were selling for around $180.

I'm in Cambridge too (west Galt). Just did my first sprint tri at Guelph 1. Really enjoyed it. I'm usually running along the Grand River trails or swimming at the Y early morning or late at night. Riding bike whenever I can. Looking forward to our next tri at Grimsby.

kevster, CMC are a good club - i know quite a few of the members, and have known chris day for a few years now. very nice people!

dansonjim, i might run into you at some point - i run the mill run, linear, devil's creek and blair/grand trunk trails all the time, and often cycle from preston heights down to the farmers market via the blair/grand trunk trail saturday mornings. usually swim at the johnson centre in hespeler, but the Y is my go-to if johnson is closed or if i can't make it for some other reason.

congrats on your first race!

cheers!

For the KW/Cambridge peeps, where do you suggest practicing open water swimming (please don't say Laurel Creek Conservation Area!)?

Guelph lake is a good place for some open water swims...you will commonly see swimmers out swimming around the lake.  There are no motorized boats and not weedy like the smaller lakes around so it is ideal.

if you're in cambridge, why not shade's mill? they have a lovely beach and quite a good size lake there.

if you don't want to spend any money, you can swim in puslinch lake - it's a bit weedy, but you can go for a swim then have lunch at the old marina since there's a dock right next to the restaurant. i'm shameless about providing entertainment for the folks eating on the balcony patio there

alternatively, the quarry ponds at puslinch tract are very nice for a swim if you don't mind doing lots of loops, and also won't cost you a dime.

that said, i was out at guelph lake for some kayaking and an open water swim on sunday.

cheers!
