USM Events
Sunny
Total Time = 00m
Overall Rank = 321/497
Age Group = 45+ Male
Age Group Rank = 29/44
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4am, 2 slices of toast with peanut butter and coffee.
Started nibbling on jelly beans and sipping gatorade.
Set off at 4.45 for the hour drive south to the Gold Coast. Arrived in good time to set up. Bike was rackede on the Saturday.
Event warmup:

Got in water to test temp. Bloody cold. Swam up and down a bit.
Swim
  • 08m
  • 300 meters
  • 02m 40s / 100 meters
Comments:

This is the first swim I've done where I was actually mid pack in the 'washing machine', and I can safely say I didn't like it. The amount of times I had to check myself whilst swimming over people or being swum over wasn't funny. I went to the side to try and find my rhythm as I'd been swimming with my head out of the water pretty much all of the time and ended up having to do a 90 degree turn to take the second buoy due to bad sighting( not often enough).
What would you do differently?:

Try to find some clear water early on, perhaps even on the outside, as I came to a dead stop at both buoys by taking them tight. Overall though I am pleased as I was second last out of the water on my first tri last October.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

both transition times are part of the bike split time.
Bike
  • 26h 40m
  • 6 miles
  • 0.22 mile/hr
Comments:

Not much to report on the bike really other than went with flat pedals instead of clipless and only slipped off them once.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 16m 49s
  • 1.55 miles
  • 10m 51s  min/mile
Comments:

The run felt like a struggle as I was pushing fairly hard towards the end trying to beat a friend, silent BTér Lesleyhn. (I didn't). I was pleased with the fact though that I kept going, and going hard, when I sooooo wanted to stop.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked about, drank gatorade, ate fruit then had a coffee.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My race pretty much went to plan once out of the water, and I wasn't too unhappy with my swim, so I'd have to say my fitness and my weight (about 230). I did beat a good few skinny blokes though as there were only a couple of people fatter than me. So WOO HOO on that.

Event comments:

Bike entry and exit chutes were barely wide enough to accommodate overtaking, though numerous people were still trying.

Mate, if I had of known you were racing I would have given you a shout out. Would've been nice to catch up with fellow BTers.

Maybe next time...

Maybe next time we'll do it together.

Full ones only from here on in. I've told Leslie no more enticers (she's a bit scared of the swims).
