MalcolmG - 2011-05-04 3:08 PM Well, I read half the book last night I wont reveal any spoilers, but I will suggest if you're not good at dragging yourself away from a good book, then find a block of time where you can read it all at once! I have questions that need answering, and can't wait to get back to it tonight.

Dayum, you must be a wickedly fast reader!  I *wish* I could read fast.

Not necessarily, I started reading it around 10pm and stopped just before 1:30am with a few interruptions along the way (like trying to sleep for 10-15 mins - my sleeping patterns are pretty screwy, I fell asleep when I got home from work and couldn't sleep anyway/wanted to read more). I guess I probably got through about 50-55 pages per hour, I'm usually much slower but I usually read sciency non-fiction and have to stop and re-read frequently to make sure I'm understanding what I'm reading.

I actually have no idea what fast reading is (maybe we should monitor our pace and 5 page PRs etc as a triathlete/book club synergy)

I plan to pick it up tomorrow - but I am a wickedly fast reader (wages of a poorly spent nerd-filled youth) so if it's as good as everyone says, I'll have it done quick ...

I'm a very avid reader, knock off probably 3-5 books a month - so I'm looking forward to this! I have lots of suggestions too for future possibilities ...

>>That's 20 days. Is it normal for a book group to have such a lengthy gap? I've never participated in one, but I think I'd go crazy reading a book and then waiting weeks to discuss it. Does the group pick more books for subsequent discussions in the meantime?<<

Ok I must be insane then -- I have this craziness of not wanting to race through a book.  I mean isn't the idea to be enjoying the read? I mean yeah, I get the anticipation of getting to the end, but I also often find myself forcing myself to slow down to savor it.

Also doesn't anyone else have other interests but reading?  (LOL, other than tri) Maybe it's just me, but I only read before bed and don't sit down and plan to finish a book in an evening.

If everyone thinks the 20 days is "too long" I might have to defer........

I agree with you, it is not "too long" specially when a discussion about the book will take place. Actually it is only 2 weeks.  The reading wasnt suppossed to technically start until monday to give everyone a chance to get the book.

During the week i only have time to read at night, on the weekends is that i read a lot more.

So book worms, no spoilers...............Wink

I missed the bit about when we were supposed to technically start reading until it was already too late. It usually takes me 3-4 weeks to get through a book because I also only read at night and often don't have much time or only get through a few pages before falling asleep. I think the time frame is fine

It could be tough for me to get finished by the deadline. But my e-loan is only 2 weeks, so I'd better get right to that. I really should be reading student papers, but I'd much rather read a good book.

There is no specific guidelien, just a general time frame to give everyone a chance, we all read when we can......Glad that you are enjoying it, it is always a good sign when someone can not put a book down.

The time frame is fine and dandy for a short book such as this.

Longer books? It will be a looooonger time frame!

Right?

Fasties can save the book and read it closer to dicussion time if they wish.....and those who savour each lovely page can take their own sweet time.

Sound good?

I started this book and have to say that it's a little difficult to read considering it's in first person of a child. Tough!

I agree 100%, however if you have the mind of a child like I do, after 10 or 15 minutes it's quite manageable

Normally book clubs will give you the book title one to two months out from the actual discussion.  That way those who want to get it from the library usually have a chance of actually getting the book.  It also takes into account that people read at different paces, so if you are a fast reader, you just plan to read the book closer to the actual date of the discussion.  I tend to be one of the people suggesting the books and will have already read them and then need to refresh prior to the actual discussion.

I finally worked out the e-book thing. Ended up paying for the Kindle download, but it's kind of cool having the book on my phone.  How many actual pages is this book?  I just finished the first section, Presents.

I think you will really like it, I LOVED it! Favorite book in a long time. I read it in 3 days I think and I don't have much time to read.

I've started Room so I can make sure I get it done in time (did some reading at my daughters swim meet yesterday) and am really hoping it gets better.

It does get better, hang on and you will see.  It takes a while for the story to suck you in but eventually it does....

I purposely didn't read the synopsis of this book and right now I'm just plain confused as to where the book is going. I'm just in the beginning (can't remember what section, I'm on a Kindle) and it's all still day to day stuff with the kid talking with his mother. I think it's time to read the synopsis to get more into the book.

I finished the book last night and really enjoyed it. It's been quite a while since I've read any fiction so it was a nice bit of escapism and will hopefully get me back into reading more regularly.

Looking forward to the discussion in a couple of weeks
