The Gravel Pond at Chatfield was 58 when I did a practice tri on Saturday.  I like to think of it as "preventative icing."

I'm itching to go, but it's cold. Probably give ity a try next week. A friend went last week and was pissed it was so cold.

Anyone braved the plunge into Aurora Reservoir yet? It always seems to warm up much slower/less than the other locations.

I'll be out there tonight with Wavedog for Dip N' Dash #1.  I'm pretty certain it's going to be darn cold, too.

If its any consolation Grant Ranch felt like it was way up in the mid-60s on Sunday, never felt really cold despite being in the water ~45 minutes Cool

Anyone swimming Chatfield today or know what the temp is? I pretty excited to go for my first OWS. Hope I don't freeze. Want to get in a TT.

As expected, Aurora Res was 58 last night.  After 4 OWS's this year I'm becoming accustomed to the cold water.

Well I have never swam in a wet suit so I don't even know what to expect. What I know is I do not like cold water. So.... can you even get a good work out in? I mean right now is it so cold you can't really do much.... or is it still workable and the faster I swim the better it is and you get used to it? Like I said one of my goals today was to warm up and do a TT. If I'm just feezing and not moving very well I might wait some more.

Well it was windy and cloudy... water was fine though. Didn't bother me one bit. I don't know what the water temp was. Some people swimming with just suits. Now I'm worried my wet suit will be too hot in August.

ETA: Oh ya, forgot to mention... I suck in open water.

You can still get a workout in, it just really sucks and your extremities start going numb. The hardest part is making yourself get into the water, from what I remember. And that terrible feeling as the water starts seeping into your wetsuit. And fighting the instinct to gasp when you plunge your face in for the first time.

But after all that, it's not terrible. It's not pleasant...but not terrible.

But this is all with the caveat that I have not been able to make myself go yet this year since the closest (swimmable - Cherry Creek definitely doesn't count) water to me is Aurora, which is likely the coldest reservoir around.

Just keep practicing your sighting - even when you're just swimming laps in the pool practice your sighting every 2nd or third breath or so.  Unless they have changed things, the 5430 Sprint swim starts out directly into the sun so it can be challenging to see where you're going, I ended up just sighting on the sun itself for the out leg.  Also, I would make sure to swim out and back to the platform a few times before the race starts, if nothing else, so you don't have the cold take your breath away when you first put your face in the water.

As for Aug, even though I really hate cold water and much prefer it to be warm, I was defintely very close to overheating on the HIM swim.  For me, I'm a weak swimmer so I didn't want to give up the wetsuit, but a sleeveless defitely would've been preferable.

I just talked to a ranger at Aurora and the water temp is 63. Not bad for the middle of June.
I will most likely be at dip n dash #1.

So...

Chatfield:

The beach doesn't open on Friday until 10:00. They were grading it, and cleaning it etc. But I wasn't really using the beach, just the water, so the workers didn't even blink an eye. The park police came in at one point and didn't stop me either. So...

Had my first "ICK" today, when a big blop of seaweed ingulfed me(so it seemed). The worts was tha feeling on the hands and fingers.

I just swam at Boulder Rez on Wednesday and it was beautiful! I wasn't hot or cold...it was just right. Cool

Looking forward to the Boulder Peak at the rez! Hopefully I can make the 1500 meter swim without doing too much breast stroke...at least that is my goal!

Doing my first ever OWS tonight at Cherry Creek - part of the Aquaman series.  Almost talked myself out of it - worried about whether I would need a wetsuit.  Turns out Campus Cycles is currently selling their stock of rentals, cheap, and I picked one up this afternoon.  Now that I've got that covered I'm just hoping it doesn't get cancelled due to lightening!

Rachel, I hope last nights conditions don't throw you off... CC Res was brutal last night.  I worked the beach as a volunteer and couldn't believe how many people quit.  As a lifelong swimmer I was glad I wasn't out there.  Normally conditions aren't that tough, so stick with it if you had a rough time.

The Chatfield swim beach is closed right now for high e-coli.

It happens after a rain and hot weather...

I was there volunteering too - registration and aid station.  The water was really rough and I was happy to be on land for sure.   I heard a lot of people where pulled in but didn't get a count.

Wow, I was also there. It was my first OWS in about 15 yrs. Brutal. If it hadn't been for the volunteers I would have turned around at buoy #1. As it was I was able to catch my breath and ease on. Reminded my of a survival float more than a swim, but glad to have it behind me.

So I swam in Chattfield today. Wow was it warm. Don't know the actual temp only to say I'm no polar bear. So I swam one lap in my full wet suit and it was too hot. Took it off and did another one. I was only slightly slower, but I was also a bit tired.

So now I'm debating on whether I will wear my wet suit in Bolder 70.3. Anyone know what temp Chattfield is now or Boulder res? I got to say it felt good swimming open water without.
