Precipitation
Total Time = 1h 16m 47s
Overall Rank = 51/113
Age Group = M45 - 50
Age Group Rank = 3/5
Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 6 am and felt OK. Ate a pop-tart, some protien drink, excel zero, coffee.
Event warmup:

Challenge just staying warm. I jogged around a little - not enough to really warm up. Really did nothing to prep (cold and rany).
Swim
  • 00m
  • 820 yards
  • / 100 yards
Comments:

Cold and wet. Had to run through several puddles inch or more deep. I went off-trail and tried to kept my feet somewhat dry (waste of time). For me - ran a 8:04 for the mile, which is not a pace I've ever maintained. Still TOO SLOW!!!
What would you do differently?:

Warm up more - practice my running.
Transition 1
  • 00m 54s
Comments:

Good T1 - did not mount my shoes to the bike and do a running-mount - too wet and I had booties on my shoes. Never tightened dials on shoes for the ride - booties were enough to keep them tight. Only had to put on my helmet and shoes - passed a few in T1
What would you do differently?:

Nothing considering the conditions
Bike
  • 39m 42s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 18.79 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike saved me as slow as it was - was still faster than a lot of others out there. Used the whole road and tried to stay out of the standing water - slowed for corners I would usually just blow through on my tri-bars. Did not want to risk a crash in a C race, so did not really push hard in any curve / turn / braking area. WET WET WET Did pass several individuals during this portion - many in group 5 minutes before me. Caught the #2 in AG and passed him on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Ride / drive the course before. First lap I stayed back a little to understand where to push and where to reserve. 2nd lap was faster.
Transition 2
  • 00m 45s
Comments:

Again passed some in T2, but lost my advantage to several on the run. Did do flying dis-mount and ran with socks on in the rain since they were already soaked. No need to keep them dry at this point.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - best T2 for me ever.
Run
  • 27m 25s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

SLOW SLOW SLOW. Need to be closer to a 7 minute pace to be able to compete in the run. Felt OK, but legs like briks at the start and I was actually running with AG #2 for a while while we got our legs back. He then did and blew me away (he rain it in 21 minutes). Not a bad run for me, but i do need more help
What would you do differently?:

Need to get some speed on the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Stopped racing and got dry

I think you raced very smart!! So not worth it to crash on wet roads. Glad they spared you the swim. Race organizers have some sense! Again, a respectable showing and one step closer to Alcatraz! Nicely done, John!

So they basically switched the open water swim for an open water run ...

You KICKED some Manatee tail flipper. Toldja you'd exceed expectations ... even though you got thrown a curveball.
