So, who's racing the new Gull Lake Tri? I did this many moons ago when it was an Oly, way back in '93. It was my first ever and glad it is back!

I just did my first tri, the Hawk Island Sprint, yesterday and this looks like a logical next step.

I wonder how many athletes will be at the Gull Lake Tri who, like you, remember it *way back when*... :-

As a life-long Gull Lake fan, I am really excited about this... and what a fun addition to the Lake's greatest holiday!

Have a great race, everyone!

Since I am from the area (Plainwell), I know all about Gull Lake, and am happy it is back and that I will be in town to race it! Since I guess 93 was the last time it was held, this will be my "Back-to-back" event, just a few years apart!

Looking forward to it, see you all there!

@ Emily

There are some days when I get an email every 2 or 3 hours from someone who has participated in the race before.  It's always uniquely sentimental too, which is really really cool.  It's like they're talking about the experience as if they're part of an exclusive club with fantastic memories.  It was also my course organizer's (Jim Mishler, RD: Shermanator, Double Time, Physically Strong) second triathlon ever.  We're excited...

Here's some food for thought...

All Weathermen: "It looks like the folks at Gull Lake will beat the bad weather later on in the day!  God has blessed us all."  We're expecting sun and moderate temperatures the whole way through.  Four days in counting...

Anyone who hasn't signed up: make sure to do so by Thursday!  Registration is over come midnight, and we won't have race day registration.  Make sure to tell your friends as well!

I'm kinda praying for some blistering hot weather, give me a little advantage on my northern brothers and sisters! I swear, if it dips into the 80s here in NC, folks break out the parkas and start riding on the trainers indoors!

I'll race in just about anything, typhoons (did a 5k in the Philippines in a typhoon's tail), but I'd rather have a nice day everytime!

Hope to see some old friends at the race!

Out of all the Races I've got on my calendar, this one has certainly inspired the most discussion... and all in a good vein!

I am delighted to see so many people geared up for this revival race! Well done, Dan & team, for bringing this one back!

I'm truly excited and happy this race is back. It's an original, the real deal. It also says something about the current, positive state of our sport when a classic returns.

When I did Gull Lake back in the 1980's we had Karen McKeachie there, who is still racing, Lew Kidder, Dave Evans- the Ann Arbor crew. Charlie Blanchard was there. It was a key race.

I'd love to be back there this weekend. If you are racing, having a great race. I understand there are still a few entries left so it may be possible to jump in the event. Here is the link:

REMINDER:

  • Registration ends at midnight tonight, so make sure you sign up.
  • Final race update is coming very shortly!
  • Anyone who has done the race before should let me know, if you're okay with sharing your stories publicly.  Why I mention:
    • At my requests, all media coming to the event will allow you to come to them with anything.  They'd like these comments, but this race is not about publicity in the least.
    • I'd be proud to these stories on the race website.
  • We're two days away to the race that was last held almost twenty years ago.  Simply saying it is amazing, so get ready for a fantastic coming home party.

Looking forward to racing on Saturday at Gull Lake.  Just curious, does anyone know the size or how many entrants approximately there are?

Jason:

I checked just now, and we have 143 participants.

We're about to begin a huge promotional push about signing up - Please remember that this is the last day of registration!  I'd greatly appreciate anyone who spreads the word if the opportunity comes up.

FYI to the competitors: if you haven't scoped the course, about 1/3 of the bike route got re-stoned (read: semi-pack + loose stones) recently. Didn't want it to surprise anyone!

... about 1/3 of the bike route ...
Strike that. I mean about 1-2 miles [the 40th Street stretch to the S curve]

I am assuming we don't have to worry about loose stone do we?

Definitely take the S curve with caution. Otherwise, I just rode the 40th Street stretch and it's fairly packed if you stay in the tire tracks... just rough. If you are in the middle or outer edges of the lane, there is loose stuff. It's only a mile or so of the course on the way out... the rest is pretty flat, clean, and fast.

Fun race today, great weather and met some really nice people.  Nice job to everyone who raced and thanks to the people who put it together.  I will be back next year.  Does anyone know who or what company did the photographing today?

Jason,

TriathletePhotos is the organization who took the pictures of the race.  Thousands of photos will be available before the end of the holiday weekend.  Mark Chamberlin, incredible guy and owner of this organization, will try to provide an example or two for this forum as examples the quality he's provided.

Thanks,

Dan
